I think the real PF split happened when Syd Barrett left. He was a genius who taught the others almost everything they knew. Good things happened after that, but it was a very different band. The non-waters floyd is a lot more like the waters-fronted floyd than either are like the original. I think that some of the post-waters stuff is better than the waters stuff anyway.... (also, they were never a prog-rock band).

they were just going through the motions to collect their checks. Nobody in the band seemed into it at all... basically relied on the light show ...
