5. I hate those commercials so much, I become angry at the site of the store itself.
I feel like driving through the front doors and smashing it all up.

But then I decide Jared isn't worth the prison stay and think better of it.

How can they be so universally despised? Maybe it has to do with co-opting a moment most of us would like to cherish as one of life's high points with vapid, tacky branding?

12. I only get that way with stereotyping commercials.
Namely any that shows a man can be as Emeril with a backyard grill, but has never set foot in a kitchen in his life and has to be given photos of canned goods in order to shop at the store

a 2001 quote in the GPS commercial is a infinitesimally-redeeming bit of sci-fi homage, or yet another offense in their infinite rap sheet of suckitude...

21. The Jared commercials are horrible.
I took a class in Diamond Grading that GIA (Gemological Institute of America) taught.

We referred to the crummy diamonds they sell at the mall as "fish gravel". Should be in an aquarium.

Those diamonds are so bad they should die and be reborn as grinding wheels.

Any jewelry they sell at the mall, that does not have a certificate for any large diamonds, and a grade with a plot of all the flaws and a report on the quality of the cutting and polish, is bad stuff.

A GIA Report should have things like: Color: H;
Clarity: VS1;
Cut:Good;
Polish:Good
And a diagram of both the top (table) and underside (pavilion) with the flaws plotted and their type described.

People like it because it flashes, but put it under a ten-power loupe, and it's very trashy.

I once worked at a department store "fine jewelry" dept (big joke), and the manager and the other salespeople DID NOT KNOW WHAT A TEN-POWER LOUPE WAS!!!!

All they had was great big hand magnifiers. Not the same!!! :grr: :banghead:

That's what I get for having some education in the subject.

25. Years ago, I bought and sold stuff at flea markets and learned a little
about jewelery. When my future wife and I were searching for an engagement ring, we were apalled at the abaolute shit sold in the mall stores.
We found and bought a beautiful ring in 14k gold with an old large table cut diamond set in platinum in great condition for under $400. It was from the 1930's or a little earlier, and no one makes anything as nice now.

Jared sucks.

Edited on Wed Feb-11-09 12:36 PM by old mark
that is gone in small objects like jewelery that most people don't even realise they have lost something. Take some time to look at some old or "estate" jewelery - it is very rewarding just to see it.
I have been pissed at DeBeers ever since I heard the present boss De Beer state that it was "God's Will" that his family become super rich controlling the diamond output.

"He went to Jared" *meaningful, condescending glance at significant other*

Translation: "Why didn't you go to the chain jewelry store and buy ME an overpriced piece of useless crap, you big sissy-boy loser who can't take care of his woman?"

It's disgusting. These commercials reinforce two bad stereotypes - the stereotype that all women are vicious gold-diggers who don't care about anything in a relationship except receiving massive quantities of glittery crap, and the stereotype that only men who buy lots of glittery crap for their gold-digger ladies are worthwhile human beings and everyone else is a total loser. Ugh ugh ugh.

I told my husband that if he ever "goes to Jared", I'm divorcing him. :evilgrin:

And don't even get me started on the "every kiss begins with Kay" rubbish...

32. A few days ago my wife was complaining to a friend
That she didn't think she was going to get anything for Valentine's. My friend had to bite her tongue because she knew what I was up to.

There's a bracelet to go with it. About 40 carats each of ruby and emerald beads. Not the best gemstone quality but they are real. I had another friend make the pieces after I found the beads at a bargain price.

41. Oh those are really NICE!!!
Something with some individuality and quality. Gemstone beads can be quite lovely.

I've seen large polished pieces of ruby, about the size and shape of a marshmallow easter egg with a hard shell, and they are such a beautiful shade of red that they glow. One bead like that would be enough for a stunning necklace.

Thanks for posting something with individuality and craftsman ship.

I know how to make jewelry but was unable to sell it. Too much competition out there.

Holler if you want me to make something!!
