For kids under the age of six, it's not bad to let them win sometimes. But once they are over six, you want them to learn how to really play.

It's okay to like music that isn't cool and your friends wouldn't listen to--that music is made for you. Get alone with it and rock out, and don't feel bad about it. Just don't try to argue the merits of it with them. They don't like it--it's not worth it.

Don't wear uncomfortable shoes. Not if they were expensive, not if they look great--leaping Jesus on a trampoline! You *want* blisters? Bunions? Try on shoes in the store, walk in them, go with comfort. Too much of life is spent with sore damn feet.

Learn not to be cheap, if you're cheap. You'll know if you're cheap if you split restaurant bills with a calculator, or get crappy service and products that fall apart because you went for the price. Cheap costs you in the long run. Be thrifty, but cheap gets what it paid for.

Love thy neighbor, but after a certain hour, their guests better get on home and their dog better not be barking. You could be someone's neighbor. Think about that.

Try to be a xenophile. Learn new words, new languages, travel, eat different food. If something strikes you as weird, it might be you just don't know enough about it yet--savor the differences. You might not always agree with them in the long run, but learning is groovy, baby.

Read stuff. Always. Instructions, directions, the fine print, the big print, the t-shirt, the captions, the short story, the long story, the novels, the interviews, the unauthorized bios, the gossip, the manufacturer's guarantee, the terms of use, the advice from well-meaning Du-ers. It might come in handy, someday.
