Steve Martin's career has gone downhill since that movie.

BTW, interesting bit of trivia about this movie - this is the first R-rated movie I ever saw in the theaters.

2. I love that movie so much. My Mom took me to see that when it came out and
we were crying from laughing so much.

The Jerk is singlehandedly the best movie he ever made.

4. Awwww my mom took me to see it when it first came out
It was soon after my father had died and I guess she felt bad about how I was doing. And at the time I was a BIG Steve Martin fan - he had done that song "King Tut" and I would watch him when he was on SNL.

So I just HAD to see "The Jerk"

8. That movie reminds me of my Mom, that and Airplane! Anyhow i have a few copies of each
and i will tell you watching both with my daughter when she was about 11 was wonderful, like rediscovering something through new eyes----and she gets me jokes now.

"Uh, anything in this general area right in here. Anything below the stereo and on this side of the bicentennial glasses. Anything between the ashtrays and the thimble. Anything in this three inches right in here in this area. That includes the Chiclets, but not the erasers."

I think my 12-year-old son would enjoy it, but I forget why it has an "R" rating.

and it was definately not a PG rated movie - too much swearing & sex.

14. I love that movie!
Laugh out loud funny. So quotable, I don't know where to even start.

I pretty much agree with the assessment of Steve Martin's career. You could argue the same for Eddie Murphy and Chevy Chase--just too much family schlock as of late, dilutes a lot of their earlier stuff.

Although I saw a clip of Steve Martin on Letterman a couple of days ago and they did a skit with him as a passenger on Flight 1549 where he was on the wing waiting to get rescued and was pushing people off and stealing their life vests and such. It looked pretty funny, so he probably still has potential.

and on and on and ON, ffs.

He's done a LOT of great stuff since The Jerk. A lot even better than The Jerk.

Best opening joke in any movie.

I didn't like this movie very much at the time, though, maybe I would like it more now.

I am a fan of Steve Martin, however, so excuuuuuusse me!

20. Except that wasn't the opening line of "The Jerk"
Huh? I am not a bum. I'm a jerk. I once had wealth, power, and the love of a beautiful woman. Now I only have two things: my friends and... uh... my thermos. Huh? My story? Okay. It was never easy for me. I was born a poor black child. I remember the days, sittin' on the porch with my family, singin' and dancin' down in Mississippi.

It was about the 4th - 5th line in the movie

:)

I wouldn't say it's so much that his career has gone downhill as that movie was just so amazingly good that he'd be lucky to get another movie that's as good as that one.

25. I think this was a culmination of his stand up career and brand of humor
after this, he would just do regular comedy movies, and no longer engage in that Steve Martin brand of humor.

26. Well the role has to cater to that in order for him to do it.
Seems to me he's doing his level best to engage in it in the Pink Panther movies.

27. I don't know about HBO but when it's shown on TV
The part where he actually stacks up the cans is cut from the movie.

I wouldn't say his career went down after that. There were quite a few good movies afterwards, like "LA Story", and that one with Goldie Hawn and the house.
