Need a little baking help, please.
I must be drunk because i'm actually thinking about making a birthday cake for my husband, his birthday is tomorrow, yes i know, way to plan early!

Ok so he likes white frosting but not butter cream, like the white frosting you used to have on wedding cakes, it kind of has the texture of crisco and sand and if you leave the cake out for like 15 minutes uncovered the frosting actually hardens, do you know what i mean? Does anyone know where i can find a recipe for that and what that type of frosting is called, i'd ask in C & B but that forum is way beyond my baking skills.

I think you're looking for the most basic white icing.

I love it when it gets a crust!

5. I suspect it's fondant, not royal icing.
Royal icing is often used for cookies rather than cakes, because it hardens and you can stack them on top of one another.

6. that's really smooth looking so i don't think it's fondant unless it has that crisco taste
and texture. Fondant is pretty but there is no way i could make that.

11. I don't think it is royal icing either.
I use royal icing for making flowers, etc., but not to frost the cake with.

I used to watch a baker who was my close friend making it this way. She used Crisco and confectioner's sugar.

10. frosting
I use 1 C sugar & 1/4 cup water, cook till it makes a thread, then slowly pour into 1 beaten egg white, beat till it holds a peak, if you want you could add a little vanilla, but not necessary.
Hope it works but if not, you're not out much.

that stuff turns into cement after a while. I use royal icing to assemble my gingerbread houses...and those things hold together for months.

I'm not sure, but here's a recipe that might work:

2 egg whites
1 box 10X sugar
1 cup shortening
4 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat egg whites till stiff. Add shortening and vanilla and blend. Add milk and then add the sugar. Beat until smooth.

I can't really vouch for it with any certainty...the recipe I use is at home, but this is pretty close. I use confectioners' sugar in mine, but this one ought to work.

14. Maybe Seven Minute Frosting?
It tastes marshmallowy, but gets a crunchy outer shell.


Ingredients

* 1 1/2 cups sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar or 1 tablespoon white corn syrup
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 1/3 cup water
* 2 egg whites
* 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Directions

Place sugar, cream of tartar or corn syrup, salt, water, and egg whites in the top of a double boiler. Beat with a handheld electric mixer for 1 minute. Place pan over boiling water, being sure that boiling water does not touch the bottom of the top pan. (If this happens, it could cause your frosting to become grainy). Beat constantly on high speed with electric mixer for 7 minutes. Beat in vanilla.
