If this continues, I'll end up in eastern PA.

1. Just remember your ruby slippers so you can get home
:P

Lelapin called from Columbus and said she's having flashbacks to the Hurricane Ike windstorm that took out her power for almost 6 days. She's a bit unnerved tonight.

Iza tells me that it's brick, and the little piggies had trouble with that one...

We miss you too!!!

21. Well, we got through it
Turns out that we lost about a dozen shingles off of our roof, allegedly brand new just eight years ago. I say allegedly because we've lost, on average, two shingles per year since we bought the house in 2003--not a great track record.

No serious damage to the house or visible elsewhere in the neighborhood, happily--a lot of recycling bins got tossed around and there's detritus a-plenty, but it could have been worse.

How did everyone else in the OH/PA area fare?

23. It was really bad for awhile last night...
It scared me and while one cat went missing cause of the noise...my other cat, whom I am beginning to think is a bit insane..rushed over to the window to see what was causing the fuss. Stayed there for awhile too.

29. It was really overwhelming from about 12:15 to 1:00 this morning
After that, it seemed to taper off, and it didn't wake either of my boys, so that's a plus.

Of course, by that time the shingles had already blown off the roof. I didn't get a final number, but these shingles are apparently rated to 60 mph winds...

Due to the extraordinary generosity of my wonderful mother in law, we replaced our windows in December of 2007, so we were well protected against drafts and full-fledged blowouts. If we'd still had the rickety pre-WWII windows, I shutter to think what might have happened.

That's right. Shutter. And I know that it's a pane.

It woke me up, all that darned roaring outside.

Now it's just a little breezy.

It'll be out of W. PA soon, send it all to NJ etc.

But all indications are that the worst has passed. I just hope that we don't get too much rain between now and when the repair guy gets here tomorrow!

Best I can tell is at this point, she's being paid to wander around and talk about American Idol with coworkers, while calling me up to look up inane things on wikipedia for them.

Unfortunately, they did not call a delay (then cancellation) before the staff had arrived. Out of 5 buildings, our district had 3 schools closed and two open. There were trees and wires down along my route to school.

People were still driving their children to school because they didn't know about the delay/cancellation. The buses still went around to pick up stray children from street corners. Then we had to call their parents to come and get them! It was a crazy day.

I think there are people around here who still do not have power. Local news said our county (Westmoreland) was one of the hardest hit.
