"The Color Purple" THE MUSICAL!
Spin, kick, turn, and...jazz hands! :scared:

http://launch.yahoo.com/read/news.asp?contentID=217155

A musical version of "The Color Purple," Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, will have its world premiere in September at Atlanta's Alliance Theatre before what is expected to be a Broadway run...

"The Color Purple" is told through the eyes of Celie, a timid young Southern woman, who is raped by her father, gives birth to two children and suffers years of cruelty married to an abusive man. Whoopi Goldberg played Celie in Steven Spielberg 's 1985 screen version which also featured Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover...

1. This is nuts
I have never heard of this story before, but what I know from your description says the opposite of musical.

2. Agreed, an incredibly bad idea--a play is reasonable, but a musical!
Sounds like Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and DON'T anyone DARE say that was a good musical!

3. I Think It Can Be Done
Despite all the bad things that happen... it has a bittersweet happy ending. She survives. She loves. And there are some cute and comeuppance moments as well.

Simply because something is a "musical" doesn't necessarily mean everything is jazz-hands and top hats and sequins. I seriously doubt that there would be a big production number with everyone happily dancing around in the background of the rape scene.

Did anyone ever see Les Miserables? Not all smiles there either.

8. Uh... What Is 'Never'?

I think never... maybe once... let me think. Wait... that one time... maybe... no.

Okay... my answer is "never". I mean "What is never?", Alex.

5. Yeah, but the book Les Miserables, is a huge, sweeping novel,
from which quite a bit of great material for a musical can be gleaned.

The Color Purple is more a short story than a novel.

7. Go to Mama Mia and like it!
I hated Abba back when they were popular, but I love the music now because it has become pure camp!

They already have singing in the rain in the score....
