4. Yeah, it is.
To be honest, I worked in a dying industry (petrochemical) - but aren't they all these days?

And I'm only one of thousands - just today.

6. Thanks, ThomCat.
I'll be alright. I worked in a chemical plant, but I have a health care degree I can fall back on. I might as well go into the medical industry. I think that will be one of the last to go.

I am a long-time lurker, but I enjoy reading your posts. You're one of the good guys.

That's nice to hear.

I hope you can can find something good in health care without too much of a hassle or delay. I'm glad you have that to fall back upon. :)

12. I'm fine.
I have a pretty nice chunk of change in savings, and my employer gave me a decent severance package. I also went out today and stocked up on soap, toilet paper, and mac-n-cheese.

I have no outstanding debt (no credit card debt and I infrequently drive a cheap old car that is very reliable) and can quite easily live like a hermit in my cheap apartment for at least a year between my savings and whatever unemployment I'm able to draw.

I'm an urban survivalist!

a chemical plant.

It was a decent paying job for someone like me who has had limited opportunity for education.

But I'll survive. I have a little health care degree(medical lab tech) that I got a couple years ago that I can fall back on.

Immediately followed by a pay cut which means I now make less than I did before my raise! For real.

25. That sucks. A reverse raise - a lower?
That's kind of what the company I worked for did. They gave raises last November before the economy crashed where I live and then started backpedaling like crazy, ending up with, well, giving a bunch of people the boot.

22. I'm sorry to hear that

What kind of chemical plant work did you do? I ask because if you want to stay in the field, the pipeline industry is still doing well. Mainly for LNG as that's what most are pumping anymore and there are some huge fields in NE Texas/NW Louisiana that companies are going back to, to pull more out.

I work for a small company, too, but we are staying afloat by getting international contracts in addition to the few domestic ones. We've only had one put their contract on hold due to the economy. The rest are going through with their plans.

If you're not interested in getting back into it, I'm sure you can find something in the Texas Medical Center. They only employ about 70,000 people ;)

23. Health care is one of the last industries that is hiring people,
and we live in a good city for it.

I think I'm done with the petrochemical business. Might as well go where the remaining jobs are.

I'm glad to hear you're doing ok. I hope your company can hang in there until things get better. It looks like it's going to be a while.

:hi:

27. Yeah, Houston is big on medical fields, including research.
If you can do that, look at what the universities have available :)

The owner of the company I work at is a Civil Engineer and a wheeler-dealer. He's from Trinidad and seems good at getting contracts across the world. Although I did overhear him one day relating some phonecall to our receptionist/office-manager about another foreign contract. They said they'd meet him at the airport with armed guards for the duration of his stay. He didn't even hesitate to decline that job!

I still feel that Houston will weather this better than most cities. I think we're more diversified and that the oil bidness will go on for decades, partly because plastics will be in higher demand than fuel eventually, and they still have the proper equipment for that field. Luckily, plastics can be made from sources other than drilled oil, too.

28. Yeah, no matter how bad things are here, sadly, it is much worse elsewhere.
The awl bidness ain't goin' nowhere for a while, it's just going through a severe contraction.

30. Baylor College of Medicine has canned LOTS of people.
In the last couple of years. Their president has run it into the ground, run up a huge deficit when they had a surplus, and basically did everything wrong. My friend was canned in 2006 and he was not taking home enough to pay the bills with. That job was a complete waste of his talents.

He had a doctor's excuse preventing him from lifting more than 20 pounds, and they ignored that!!
A Medical School!!!

:wtf: :grr:
