2. In Texas you just have to renew every 6 years

and you only need a new picture every other renewal. If you don't need a new picture you can renew by mail. So you can go 12 years between DMV visits.

issued after you hit 21. So if you never get it suspended, you don't have to renew for 44 years.

You do need a new picture every 10 years, but that takes all of 5 minutes, get a new one on the spot.

Furthermore, it doesn't have a picture of me on it. Granted it's a "provisional licence" (i.e. learners permit) but it could be amusing as anything if I just handed that over to a police officer and told them that's my licence. Nowadays you need a two-parter - the paper part (without your picture) and a picture card.

As for queues at a drivers' licence office? Unheard of, because there's no DMV offices you can walk into, wait a bit, and get a licence. It's all done by mail or online. You take your photo and send it in. It still costs a pretty penny though: $75 in US funds for the equivalent of a learners' permit, and then there's the tests: $45 for the theory and $100 for the road test, if you want to take it in the week during the day it's cheaper but not much. Plus driving standards are waaaay stricter over there than they are here. My road test over here was a joke.

... well nope, my DMV office here is half-and-half. Some think because they're wearing a uniform that they're holier than thou and act accordingly. Others are really quite nice. Oh, they got rid of the "NEXT!!!" business... they have a wonderful number calling system - all they need to do is mash a button instead. So you're sitting there basically playing number bingo, if you "win" you get to be seen that day!
