Weird facebook thing.
I found the sister of one of my best friends from high school. We added each other.

I looked through her pictures and everything. M is conspicuously missing from the photos. M is conspicuously not mentioned in her posts to her brother.

My gut feeling is telling me that M is no longer among the living.

I feel really sad right now.

3. +1
if they are anything like my family they have a rotating DTM list and everyone gets a chance to be on it. It is currently my aunt (alternately, "she whose name cannot be mentioned" and "my sister that f*ing 'c'word" by my father)

5. Well, M's daughter was in one of the photos
With her dad and some other woman (not M) that was labeled "J and her 'real' parents". Apparently J came to stay with A for awhile.

12. Could be
I know A's brother had problems. M was always the super responsible one, but maybe adulthood took its toll or something.

15. I think you should send her a private message and just ask.
There's no need to feel awkward about curiosity. Don't make any judgements as to whether she is living or not, and just ask. Maybe she moved far away and they just don't talk as often.

11. That sounds more like estrangement than death to me.
The 'real' is a jab at M--maybe she left her husband and caused a rift in the family, and this new woman stepped in and raised J as her own...

But M passed away, the caption wouldn't say "real" parents--it would either say "her parents" or include some reference to her late mother.

8. I tried to google an old college friend once ....
found a memorial fund in his name (which was quite a unique family name). No other reference.

It sucks.

13. I am very sorry.
:(

That is not a pleasant thing to find out. And having to ask them to confirm it will be even more unpleasant.

14. I hope your friend is ok...
but how to ask? That is tricky. Maybe just keep emailing with friend's sister, and she will write something that will give you a hint / in?

The street I grew up on...in VERY rural MD...had a large group of kids on it...I was among the oldest, going down to my younger cousin's age (about a 7 year age span). Now, more than 1/2 of us are dead...mainly due to accidents or suicides. I am always afraid to ask how 'so and so' is doing...because I amy not like the answer I am about to ger.
