Musing on writing poetry, or on writing anything:
My husband just came in my study here, and was wondering what I was up to...

I had just finished making quite a few notes from a book on writing that I have found invaluable...

He was very impressed at my work, even though I've been working on it for some time; not all of it got written down tonight.

I was fussing over my lack of discipline in my writing, and he had this to say: You're doing this on your own, outside of school. That takes real discipline, real sense of purpose.

He was proud of my effort. I was astonished. I hadn't considered his POV at all. I've been feeling lazy, disorganized, sloppy even.

One of my good friends is very busy with his career, but he still makes time for his writing. I saw that as disciplined, and not my random scribbling.

Just some random thoughts on this late Thursday/early Friday...

For what it's worth...just wanted to get this out, so I wouldn't forget it.

1. See? All you folks who think my threads are always successful...
Not this time, I guess...

2. Some of us are asleep at 1:50 am on a Friday morning
:P

So, what was the book you were making notes from? I could always use another good book on writing (and then get bored with it a third of the way through, but hang onto it for future "reference".)

5. My dear kentauros!
Oh, I know! But I had to write it down then...otherwise it would have been lost! And I hate to lose anything I consider even half-way decent, lol!

Ah, yes, the book: "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. Most excellent! I found that I could not put it down...

Good morning, and thank you!

8. That's what Notepad is for!
Or better yet, EditPadPro :D

I don't always write my ideas down, seemingly able to hold onto enough of the gist of them to get it all down later. I was going over story ideas before I fell asleep last night, then over them again on the drive to work and nixing what I came up with last night

Hay, I've got that book! It is a great book, but I did get bored with it ;) I just have a weird attention span, sometimes long, sometimes not.

3. Shheeee-yut
What do you expect when you post at 3am? :D

Seriously, Peggy, I post a lot of introspective stuff like your OP and I don't get much mileage on it either unless I manage to offend someone. :)

Your hubby is right. Most people do not write unless they have to. They see it as a chore, not something that is life-enriching.

6. My dear Droopy!
I know you're right; see my comments to kentauros...

I don't normally post at that hour...but that's when the words showed up!

I HAVE to write. I get crazy if I don't, and it doesn't take much...

Thanks for responding, sweetie...

And I loved your story...

4. That's nice...
I'm definitely lazy, disorganized and sloppy, but I don't care. I hate writing. I mean I don't hate it really... but I don't like it either. I find it torturous.

7. My dear redqueen...
Not everyone should write...

I do find writing torturous too, but I like the results, at least most of the time!

I honestly don't know why I write...it seems almost as if something outside of me decided that I should.

The words thrash and bang, and I have to let them out...

9. Yeah, I'm never happy with the results.
But it's not something that I feel I have a choice whether or not to do... like you said... they thrash and bang.
