Could you pass the UK Drivers Theory Test?
RevolutionaryActs was complaining about having to renew her drivers license, and it got me thinking.

What if you had to take the drivers test as well each time? So I went online and looked for a practice theory test. I took it and guess what? I failed!

http://www.learnerstuff.co.uk/theory-test/mock-theory-test-1.htm

It's 35 questions, you have 1 minute to answer each question correctly. Passing grade is 30. I'd also figure out if I were you the differences between a pelican, puffin, zebra, toucan, and pegasus crossings.

So who here NOT from the UK can pass this test?

Mark.

2. I got 17 right! Some of 'em were just blind shithouse luck.
But mostly I got the ones correct that weren't England specific - catalytic converter, tire tread depth, and so on.

But what the fuck - Pelican, Pegasus, Zebra, and Toucan crossings? Do they actually have all four, or are two of those just made up?

4. I got 40% right
The international signage helps and car parts are car parts. But UK lights are different (green for ambulances?) :P

I guess I'm OK to apply for a license over there if I need to.

Fun exercise. :-)

7. Got 20 right
Some were common sense, some were pure dumb luck. I missed two because I didn't properly read the questions.

Rather clever of them to call it a "toucan" crossing. ;)

BTW — I saw a teevee show long ago about London cabs. Part of the final exam for drivers, it said, is blindfolding them and taking them to anywhere in the city, then having them drive a cab from there to point X in a certain amount of time.

9. That's not exactly how they do it with cab drivers...
Edited on Fri Feb-13-09 12:21 PM by TheMightyFavog
What they do is have the driver go into a room and an examiner says "I want to go from X to X within the city of London. the cab driver then has to recite the best route, including all turns, cross streets, and points of interest (hospitals, theatres, tube stations funeral homes, trains stations, major landmarks, pubs, restaraunts, etc.)

If you go to London and see someone on a scooter with a little plexiglass board on the front festooned with maps, that's a person studying to become a London Black Cab Driver.

10. 25/35
I Lived in London for over two months. My boss at my internship had to take the test because her US License was only good for one year.

She told me that during the practical, they take off points if you do not hold the shift lever properly.

12. You have a lot of unexpected wildlife in the UK.
I gave up pretty quickly. I've only been to the UK once, and I was definitely not driving....

13. The test has changed
There are 50 questions in the current version, you need to score 43 out of 50 to pass the current test.

I passed the UK theory test (46 out of 50 :)) before Christmas, got the practical test to take soon.

If anyone wants to try the test it's worth trying the official one at http://www.theory-tests.co.uk/register. You need to register but they've never used my email address for anything.
