A lawyer called me today

and left a long and detailed message on my answering machine about what was happening with our case- which was pretty interesting.

Except that I don't have a lawyer or a case right now!

Fortunately he left his name and number so I could call him back and let him know he left a message at the wrong number.

1. Was it about an interesting case? Any juicy details?

but no details.... except that somebody is willing to make an offer. :shrug: I kept thinking, I don't know these people and surely I would remember suing or being sued!

4. Leaving l-o-n-g messages is DUMB.

Don't give me the entire rambling, stream of consciousness, song and dance about WHY you called.

Just tell me who you are and what your phone number is.
I'll call you back and get all the gory details.

5. Too often, "Pastor, it's so-and so. Call me" can mean anything from

"my mother just died" to "I hate the hymns you chose last Sunday, and I'm going to the board of Deacons to get you fired". So, I appreciate knowing why people are calling. If only so I can brace myself.

10. I hate that!

I specifically tell people to leave ALL the information if they call when I'm not there. Telephone tag still exists. Just give me the damned information I'm waiting for! I don't want to call you back again to find you are out of the office so you can call me back again.

6. In my line of work, we're told not to leave much info on answering machines,

precisely because you never know who's listening. A simple "Hi. It's Pastor Critters. Can we re-schedule that counseling session?" can throw a whole marriage into turmoil. I leave just as much info as necessary, but not an iota more.

I'm surprised lawyers don't have similar boundaries regs.

"If you wish to kvetch about the sermon, press 2."

"If you see the face of Jesus in your latte, press 3."

9. A minister friend of mine got a call at 11:30 pm

asking her if she would baptize that persons baby. Non-emergency! Of course she did, but it was not exactly something that needed to be discussed late at night.

14. Some bozo once called me at 4:30 AM. Wrong number. They called back twice

and argued with me

11. Just what I was thinking.

7. There were first and last names of at least 2 people

involved besides the person he thought he was giving the message to. So, potentially it was information that could have been misused if the wrong person got it. I think the lawyer was embarrassed when I called him.

12. OMG, could I give people palpitations!

"Hi. This is Judy from the infectious disease clinic. I need to talk to you".

Something similar once happened to me. I got a call from "officer so-and-so at the Juvenile Detention Center", stating I needed to call back immediately. My heart was in my throat when I dialed. Turned out she was a client with a question about a prescription. It was all I could do to keep from yelling "Lady, don't do that to me! I have a teenager!"

13. Lawyer left a long friendly message on my machine once. Knew my name and address.

Call didn't seem to be about me. Lawyer wanted me to go across the street -- to tell the neighbors to call him. WTF. Now, a letter would have gotten across town the next day, and it doesn't take more than about fifteen minutes to drive across town. Could have been anything. I decided if he was trying to get the phone number of somebody he was suing, I didn't want the bad blood with the neighbors. So forget that
