Have you ever fired anyone? I fired my piano teacher yesterday.

It's not like she doesn't have other students, so it's not like firing someone from their only job. But it took all my courage to do it. And I still did it via e-mail.

But I needed to do it.

Still hard, though.


Have you ever told anyone they won't be working for you any more? How'd that go?

8. Several years ago I fired an employee

who referred to my wife as a "bitch". I have run a business for 35 years and it is the only employee I have ever fired on the spot.

9. Yeah. Not the greatest feeling in the world, but it needs to be done sometimes.

I've also been part of review processes that have led to others being fired.

I figure that if a person is being paid to do something, they should do it properly, show up on time, and do all that stuff that goes with the job.

And if they don't do it, they've really fired themselves and, unfortunately, devised a situation in which they left me with the task of telling them.

I do think it's important to let people know, though. In the hopes that they either don't make the same mistakes later, or, as has happened sometimes, to say "The real problem here, I think, is that your heart just isn't in this business - you really need to go do (whatever they might have talked about before)". Or, at least tell them they need to do anything but what they were just doing.

The more incompetent and/or bad attitude they are, the less I mind the process.

Your piano teacher seems like the type that would be easy to fire (excepting that totally weird-ass dynamic of her being a parishioner that dislikes you).

13. I talked to a colleague, bouncing off my thoughts about how to handle this,

and he said, "Just tell her you're getting a new teacher. You don't need to apologize or explain. She knows why it's happening. And she knows it's her fault." But I did do some explaining...that I was there to learn to play the piano, that my time is valuable, and that other things shouldn't have entered into it. I was pretty gentle. But also clear.

I wanted to leave his sorry ass there, but the other guitarplayer prevailed upon me to let him ride back to town with us.

Most of them knew I was going to do it before I did so it really wasn't that big of a problem.

14. I've been in the decision making process, but have never had to do the actual deed.

Toughest one was a long term employee, getting Alzheimer's or dementia. That was really hard.

She was under my charge in a couple situations that scared the piss outta me.

Management was really cool and graceful about it, and called her family in for a conference when they fired her.

15. I've fired people

It's always gone well because they knew it was coming. It's not anything anyone ever wants to do, though.

Once, I had to fire a paralegal who was just a total fuckup. I called her into my office, and as soon as she sat down, as I was walking around to sit behind my desk, she burst into tears.

I thought it was because she knew what was coming, so I pushed the Kleenex box (smart lawyers always keep one on the desk) towards her, and said something like, "It's all right."

She said, "No, it's not," and then told me she'd just been diagnosed with tuberculosis of the nose.

I restrained myself from backing my chair out the big window that was behind me.

Everyone was at Public Health the next day, she went off for treatment, and when she came back, she informed me that she didn't want to work for our firm any more.

It's not pleasant but sometimes has to be done.

19. Sort of

When I was 18 and working at a gas station, there was a guy named Sak (ironic come to think of it). He told the boss he was going to Hawaii for the weekend, this was a Friday I think. The boss told him he was fired.

Anyway, Sak didn't seem to react and his English wasn't real hot either. So I asked him if he understood what my boss said to him and he said, "umm no."

So I told him to go in there and ask him. :hide:

I feel a little bad but I ended up assigned to a lot of evening and weekend shifts after that.

I was bad huh? :shrug:
