His check book is so bad, he didn't record the checks he wrote.

Hell, what a way to spend a Saturday night.

1. Yeah, that ain't no fun
A prepaid debit card might keep him from over-drafting, but what would happen if, say, he went out to eat not knowing how much he had on the card and was unable to pay his bill?

3. He only goes out with his friends now.
If he didn't have enough money they would cover for him.

I will just have to make sure he has enough money on the card every month.

2. Had the same experince with family members a few months ago
Me: "You don't reconcile your check book? Really?"

Them: "What does that mean?

Me: "You compare your records against the bank's"

Them: "Those bloodsuckers? They aren't getting anywhere near my records!"

Me:  :WINE:

4. My father has been dealing with the checking account pretty well.
I am just going to have to step in to protect him.

He won't like it but that is just tough.

5. I learned a lot about this same kind of thing.
Do it as an "advisory" thing rather than taking control of his affairs.

Throw out some "I know there is a lot of fraud going on out there on the internets" type stuff and then he will beg you to look after his finances.

It took a little work, but I got a cheap lawyer and a cooperative banker to make sure that my elder's life's work will not be stolen.
