10. One knob, one button. Period.
When Defender came out with the knob, the button and another button, video games died forever.

Or am I being too intense about this?

:P

Old has nothing to do with it. Galaga will rule for ten thousand generations. So there.

30. You're kiddin' me, right?
I appreciate videogames with simple controls, but Defender took videogame interaction to the next level. It requires a greater degree of hand-eye coordination than simply pushing a spaceship back and forth across the bottom of the screen.

Not knocking Galaga, mind you, just throwing in my two cents.

EDIT: And for coin-op, either Smash TV or Bubble Bobble is the best.

32. I could get lost in an ELITE session for hours
Then again, I found myself smuggling a lot of contraband to planets where it just wasn't safe to do so. Had to take out a few nosy government craft, too, but it came with a price.

17. Sure, if you're a motard
Edited on Sun Feb-15-09 06:26 PM by Bucky
The best old time arcade game was Paperboy. You peddled down the street delivering papers and you got extra points if you threw the paper through a window or coldcocked a random breakdancer with the Daily News. Every intersection was like Frogger. It was dead brill.

Ah, the 80s...

26. I have to admit
. . . that was the game I always played. Never occurred to me that I excelled because it worked with my limited hand-eye coordination with that one button, one knob thing, but that may be the key. These days, I'm more of a Tetris dweeb.

I was surfing for a downloadable version a while back and all I could find was Asteroids. Holy fuck, did they complicate that! It's way cool, but I don't think I ever got out of training mode.

28. Stargate was my favorite.
You could play for hours on one quarter if you were good.

Galaga was fun as well. Intentionally getting tractor beamed to double up your firepower was a cool concept.

35. The game I was best at? KICKMAN
In my heyday, I could score 32,000,000 on this game. I could play it for hours on a single quarter. It was fun when crowds gathered to watch.
