My cat just said "No!" to me.

He's been "talking" and/or "yelling" his sweet little head off all day long and just came in here to do it again. So I told him, "I'll sing to you if you don't stop it. I know you don't like my singing." (I don't sing words, just toning and over-toning.)

His reply: "No!" as in a short meow that had the inflection of "no!"
I sat here and laughed for a full minute. I'm still chcukling about it :D

And now he's at my feet, blissfully quiet

1. My aunt sings, "You are my sunshine" to my cat, Sunday Girl, every single night before

bed. Sunday Girl gets in bed with her, plops down, and puts her paw over my aunt's mouth to make it stop. :rofl:

Sunday Girl loves Deborah Harry's voice. It's how she got her name. She loves punk but doesn't really like anything else.

I once had a Yorkie/Maltese mix that would growl and grumble every time country music came on, but he loved punk and jazz...just like his mamma. :)

My wife used to do the same for ours (mine now) and he never had a problem with it. I do like how yours put her paw on your aunt's mouth :rofl:

My cat doesn't seem to notice music that's played over speakers. Only when I sing does he seem to care ;)

your cat was communicating something of GREAT and URGENT importance to you ALL DAY and first you IGNORED him then went "la la la la la" to drown him out. I guess you didn't have your fingers in yours ears at the time or you wouldn't have heard him shout, in desperation, "NO". Then the poor thing just gives up and sits at your feet to watch over you as the DANGER he foresaw approaches. And you LAUGH. He must think you are deranged.

I'm worried about you too. I'd like to hear the cat's side of this.

28. I know exactly what you're talking about!!!

My dearly beloved and departed precious "Mister Baby," (Mogli, RIP 3/6/08) used to do that, and I would always drop what I was doing and follow him to see what he wanted! Usually it was food or wanting to go out, but he knew I'd listen to him as if it was of the greatest importance -- because it was.

Once a coyote was outside sniffing around the house (under this window in the photo below), because he smelled a cat (mine!) and was casing the joint to see if he could get in. Mogli became very agitated and I knew then I could trust him to tell me when danger was lurking outside. He was always right, too.

I wish he was still here, bossing me around like that. :cry: Here he is, guarding the house:

Mine just rubs against the bag as I'm trying to fill his bowl, so inevitably some spills on the floor. Then he digs into it without a "word".

This is the first time in all the time we (I) have had him that I fully understood what he wanted. I can sometimes tell by tone what might be going on, but it's usually only after a check of his food/water that I know anything new.

He does understand my speech with the word "treats" however ;)

When I talk to my cats, I speak human with a kitty accent. I think it amuses them. :)

7. My frightfully obese Maine Coon sings "Wooooooo"

at feeding time. It's the funniest thing ever. She's a sweetie, though, but does not allow tummy rubs unless she's standing up. Then she likes them. Try to touch her belly when she's on her back, and it's bandaid time.

Fitz, the semi-feral stray we just adopted, sits on my lap and rolls on his back, just to show how much he trusts me. But he won't let me touch his tummy either. I'm supposed to just feel honored that he'd expose his underside, then worship him. :)

6. actually I have heard a similar sound from my cat & he meant business

A few times he has not just yelled at me but screamed at me. I'm lying on the couch and he comes up on the arm of the couch behind me and gives a couple of 'ma's to announce that he is there. I acknowledge with a couple of 'ma's. Normally this means he wants to walk down my body and curl up and I am saying "ok, c'mon'. But actually we got to trading 'ma's until he became, apparently, furious and he started 'ma'ing faster and louder leaving no room for any response and giving every appearance of being mad as hell. I actually started getting kind of scared. I then went to the "good kitty..sweet kitty" talk, and he nipped me and stalked off. This has happened a couple of times; he solicits my attention and then is furious when I give it to him. What am I doing wrong? Maybe it's a dominance thing? If so, he is winning. But if so why is he so furious?

and give him some catnip with a little valerian ;)

Valerian is like catnip-zilla and quite safe for cats, though they will be ultra-wylde for a while, thus the need for gloves ;)

Seriously, I have no idea, but it could be as you say and some kind of dominance thing. Maybe next time pick him up and put him in your lap versus waiting for him to act. Maybe that's what he wants, you to do more for him
