DARRYL (Strawberry) BARES MET SEXCAPADES
DESPITE their steroid scandals, today's baseball superstars are still choirboys compared to the boozing, skirt-chasing New York Mets of the mid-1980s.

"We were the boys of summer. The drunk, speed-freak, sneaking-a-smoke boys of summer," writes onetime home-run legend Darryl Strawberry in "Straw: Finding My Way," out in April from Ecco. " infamous rolling frat party . . . drinking, drugs, fights, gambling, groupies..."

Beer "was the foundation of our alcoholic lifestyle," he writes. "We hauled around more Bud than the Clydesdales. The beer was just to get the party started and maybe take the edge off the speed and coke."

The team's mantra on the road, he writes, was to "tear up your best bars and nightclubs and take your finest women . . . The only hard part for us was choosing which hottie to take back to your hotel room. Lots of times you . . . picked two or three."

Although he doesn't name names, Strawberry relates how team members picked out girls from the stands for quickies. He once watched a pitcher march a frisky fan to a private room for oral sex: "I was jealous. When I saw her heading back to her seat, I gave her a sign. She smiled, turned right back around, and met me in that same little room . . . I had to be quick and run back out on the field."

I'm surprised this is even news...even back in the 80s, growing up in VA as a youth, i read the stories about players getting 'serviced' between innings by eager women (I'm almost certain the unnamed pitcher is Cone or McDowell)...

1. I remember stories about Keith Hernandez leaking out to the press.
Loved the nose candy if I remember correctly. Probably had his own stable of groupies too no doubt.

2. this is why I dreamed of being a baseball star as a kid.
I remember one story Jim Boutin used to tell. The manager of his triple A club comes into the locker room to give his team a pep talk before a critical game. "Boys", he said, "you're this close to major league pussy" holding his thumb and forefinger about a centimeter apart.

3. To even a casual Mets fan...
the stories off the field of the 80's Mets are no secret...in fact if they toned down the partying, they probably could have won a few more rings in that time period. Between Doc and Straw, that was a lot of wasted talent

5. Yeah, that always amazed me that they only won one World Series.
At the time I could've seen them winning 3 or 4, 2 at the very least.

6. They shouldn't have won even 1
they only won it because the Sox played with their heads between their dicks in games 6 and 7.

8. That wasn't all Buckner's fault
There was plenty of blame to go around.
