Why do I bother trying to move up at work?
When clearly it is never going to happen. They do not want me. It's time I accepted that and moved on. Long past time. I have been turned down for two different jobs this week. That makes 6 just since I finished my MS (and I am wondering why I bothered to spend the time and money to do that, clearly it doesn't mean shit, even in science). And probably 15 or 20 since I started here. I have had the same job for nearly 12 years. I am at the top of the career ladder such as it is. It only requires a GED; I have a master's. I am bored out of my mind most of the time.

I want to leave this town so badly. I want to leave this state. I really hate Texas. But my boyfriend is starting to sound like he wants to stay here. Well, sometimes he sounds like it and other times I am not so sure. Anyway I will soon likely have to start applying for jobs out of state. This job is sucking the life out of me but part of me wishes I was the sort of person who could just give up, accept things the way they are and wait for retirement.

1. My anthro degrees won't land shit for me.
I'm going to start calling them sociology degrees, since .000001% of the US knows what the hell anthropologists are trained to do. Hint: we don't just camp out on remote tropical islands with pens and pads. 99% of the rest of the world doesn't even distinguish between sociology and anthropology; in US programs we read all of the theory and know all of the methodologies.

But yeah, my heart goes out to you...I'm still looking for work and am facing a move 800 miles just to get into an area where it is likely I can find some.

2. There is a lot of competition out there.
I've done everything I can do, I think.

3. Dude! You should really look into industrial anthropology.
I've been thinking about going back to school for that myself, it sounds way fun.

8. Don't really need a specialized degree.
Theories and methodologies are the same...only special skill is selling out the ethics of your field and exploit your training for corporate gain.

4. Where are you and what do you do?
There are some good places to live in Texas if you can find work there.

So pretty much restricted to the coast. I prefer to work for the government (as I currently do). I simply do not like or trust the business world and would not fit in as any sort of consultant. So I am looking for a government or non-profit job mainly.

right now I am in Corpus, a small town with very little going for it, certainly hardly any jobs in my field.

6. Yes, not a lot in Corpus except the sea.
On the bright side, it is a Democratic spot in the state. If you have some free time you could always get involved with local county party politics. Good luck, though, it does sound like moving is the best option for you. Jobwise.

9. Most of the (non-partisan) local officials are actually Republicans
Or DINOS, which amounts to the same thing. With my job, I cannot get involved with politics. Or at least it's a very gray area and I don't want to take the chance.

11. I hear ya
I am stuck with no way up, I know the feeling :(

after 8 1/2 years and 3 promotions, I'm watching my company shrink before my eyes and I know there's no way up from where I am no matter how hard I work. I have stopped looking at work as anything other than a way to provide a paycheck for my family.

I'm thinking about buying a 15 yd. dump truck and going to work on the upcoming highway and construction projects, at least it would be something I could easily walk away from at the end of the work day.
