OUCH! Be careful with monster neodymium magnets!

These aren't garden-variety fridge magnets. These are mad scientist magnets. Wile E. Coyote magnets.

If you have an old computer with a dead hard drive, and don't mind sacrificing the hard drive for Science!, you can dissect it and have your very own neodymium magnet. It's not quite so insanely powerful that it will do what I'm linking to shortly, but they might mash fingers, and they'll clamp to your fridge hard enough to scratch it, and will be pretty difficult to remove. Most people don't think that magnets can get that strong.

Still, we can't leave well enough alone. It's time to take things to the next level.

THESE ARE ABSOLUTELY NOT TOYS AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS! KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN!
THESE MAGNETS CAN EASILY CRUSH FINGERS!
WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR INJURY OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY THESE POWERFUL MAGNETS.
THESE MAGNETS ARE SOLD TO ADULTS ONLY AND REQUIRE
AN ADULT SIGNATURE UPON DELIVERY.

If you really need unbelievably powerful magnets, here they are.
Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in accelerators, levitation devices, magnetic beam amplifiers, scrap iron separators, etc.

Beware - you must think ahead when moving these magnets.

If carrying one into another room, carefully plan the route you will be taking. Sensitive instruments like computers & monitors will be affected in an entire room. Loose metallic objects and other magnets may become airborne and fly at great speed to attach themselves to these magnets. If you get caught in between the two, you can be severely injured. These magnets will crush bones in the blink of an eye.
Two of these magnets close together can create an almost unbelievable magnetic field that can be incredibly dangerous.
Of all the unique items we offer for sale, we consider these items the most dangerous of all. Our normal packing & shipping personnel refuse to package these magnets - our engineers have to do it. This is no joke or exaggeration - and we cannot stress it strongly enough. You must be extremely careful - and know what you're doing with these magnets.
Two Supermagnets can very easily get out of control, crush fingers and instantly break ribs or even your arm if opposing poles fly at each other.
A small child recently lost his hand when his father left two # 31 supermagnets unattended. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table,
it became airborne and obliterated his small hand.

Cool!

:wow:

Now we're talking. These are the supermagnets - ones that have been on Mythbusters a few times, that Adam Savage is terrified of.

Anyways, here's the link. This guy was very lucky in that only the tip of a finger got mashed to paste, and he wasn't more seriously injured - he's around to tell the story.

But still...

Dirk's Accident (ACHTUNG! GORY PICTURES! DO NOT CLICK IF YOU DON'T LIKE SEEING BLOOD AND GORE!)

Ow. That had to hurt!

3. Here's another video.
This one isn't real blood and gore - it shows what happens when a finger analogue made out of a chicken bone and pastrami gets caught between two of those monster magnets...

11. Happy Fun Neodymium Magnets are being dropped on Iraq
Happy Fun Neodymium Magnets are made of an unknown glowing substance which fell to Earth, presumably from outer space.

Happy Fun Neodymium Magnets may suddenly accelerate to dangerous speeds...

7. Are these the same as the little magnets on my fridge?
I bought these powerful little magnetic disks at the craft store and use them for refrigerator magnets. The problem is that they are so powerful, you have to slide them to an edge to remove them.

8. Yeah, sounds pretty close.
Neodymium magnets are pretty common, actually - if you have a computer with an old hard drive you don't mind sacrificing, you can take it apart and get the magnet out.

And yeah, they're so strong that if we're talking about small ones, they'll clamp to the fridge so hard you'll have a rough time getting it off, and if you let two of them snap together with your finger in between, they might draw blood.

The ones the guy in the Youtube and pictures I posted were the size of hockey pucks, and had a pull force on the order of 700 pounds. Sort of explains how his finger got squished.

9. How are these delivered?
Might be fun watching the UPS guy trying to get the package out of the truck.

10. I was wondering that myself.

Apparently, they do have special packaging - big boxes with the magnet suspended in the middle to keep other objects from getting so close that they're attracted with a huge amount of force.

Oh, and they're always shipped by ground. Those magnets will screw with aircraft avionics, so they do not fly, period.
