I just bought my mother a $200 gift card to your crappy overly expensive store last month for her birthday. Now I read in the paper that you filed for bankruptcy and you're not going to be honoring any of your gift cards.

But the fear of that kind of thing is why I started giving cash or a note promising the bearer (usually mom) that I will spend a day with her going out to the store and helping her with the selection, purchase, and installation of whatever it is she decides she wants.

I always thought gift cards were a ripoff - first, they tax you when you buy it, then they tax the person when s/her uses it; next, if you want to give someone a gift, but don't know what, what's wrong with cash? You limit the options when you specify a place with a gift card.

That said, your situation sucks. I was shocked when I saw that Fortunoff's had filed - they've been around forever.

It's so much worse out there than we think, I think.
