Lounge Vibes Needed
I have a Type 1 diabetic 11 yr daughter. Her brother has the stomach bug. He has gotten sick 3 times. I do not want her to get this.

Every time she gets the stomach bug, she ends up in the ER hooked to IV's for fluid and glucose and heading for Diabetic Ketoacidosis, which could end her up into ICU.

Thank you all if you wish to give the famous Lounge Vibes.

1. Vibes given
My daughter was diagnosed Type 1 at age 9 (she's 19 now). I know exactly what you're going through.

I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence, but you do know about drastically increasing the insulin (shots even if she's on the pump) when her sugars and ketones go up. As her blood becomes more acidic, she becomes more insulin resistant.

I know this from experience...several times. My daughter finally got an endo that will answer pages (even in the middle of the night) and has helped with this several times. If she's moderate or greater ketones with BG above 150, my daughter gets massive (up to 3X normal bolus) insulin. Be sure to have her test often.

You probably already know this...I just feel better passing it on anyway. Good luck!

3. Thank you
I do not think that you have insulted me, I would love to have the knowledge of others.

She is MDI, not on the pump. We do good in the beginning, then she tends to crash, going 50 and below and high ketones. to keep anything in her is a godsend. We do increase her insulin, however this results in the crashes, and keeping nothing down.

You have been at this longer than me. She is 11 and was diagnosed at 9. Any knowledge that you have, I would greatly appreciate. Her Endo is 250 miles away, the only Ped Endo in this state.

5. What types of insulin does she use?
My daughter started with mixes of NPH and R ("regular" insulin in those days). She had to mix some, and some were just R, and she had to eat on a strict schedule with a certain number of carbs per meal/snack.

Eventually, she went to Lantus and Humalog. The Lantus was great...just one injection every 24 hours to handle the basil. Then she would inject Humalog whenever she ate anything, at a fixed unit/carb of food ratio. She was able to vary when and how much she ate, and her control improved significantly.

4 years ago, she switched to the infusion pump (she uses the Animas). It's actually more work - she tests her BG more often, but the level of control is amazing. It is now rare to see her BGs outside of 70 - 130.

As far as being low with high ketones, the secret there is normally back to a normal insulin schedule with LOTS (and lots) of fluids and frequent ketone tests. Be sure to talk to her Dr/nurse while this is going on - they always know best. If her endo isn't good about returning messages, get another, even if not pediatric. Almost all issues can be handled over the phone IF the endo is responsive.

Hope she avoids the illness!

4. Massive Lounge Vibes for both of them!
I hope your son finally gets over this bug and gets rid of it for good!

And I hope your daughter stays very safe and doesn't get sick.

I hope your home is large enough that you can keep them well separated. I hope it's well ventilated too so his germy air isn't recirculating.

A hug for you too. You must be very stressed out right now.
