I am so tired of being accused of being grumpy or antisocial because I seem to be the only one in the world who hates a fucking telephone. I work in IT support, so when the phone rings, most of the time I have to pick it up. And it always rings at work whenever I am attempting to concentrate or just about to accomplish something meaningful. Without fail.
At home? Even worse. The phone rings whenever I sit down to eat, go in the bathroom, try to have a heart-to-heart talk with someone, or any other inconvenient moment. Here's the bulk of it. My wife has a sister and mother who call her
ALL
DAY
LONG
ALL
DAY
EVERY
DAY
and so you can imagine how sick I am of the phone and its endless ringing. My wife, whom I love very much, will drop everything short of an intimate moment together and run to answer the phone. No matter what it is, whoever just decided to butt into our lives automatically gets the attention. I have had to cover her bases because of her chatting on the phone (take over the cooking, etc.) more times than I can count. But if I sit down, pull out a book and begin tuning out the rest of the world I'm accused of shirking my duties. Somehow, the phone is allowed ultimate authority over us.
And that is what I hate about the damned device more than anything in the world: someone can pick up the receiver, punch some buttons in, and suddenly they've taken over a part of your life, regardless of whether you wanted them to or not.
My philosophy: the phone is there for my convenience. No one else's. Leave a message. Better yet, send me an e-mail. But don't call when I'm having dinner with my kids, reading them a story, trying to seduce my wife, attempting to take a nap, or any of the other of hundreds of things that are more important to me than my sister-in-law calling my wife during dinner for the seventh time that week to "chat about 'the Biggest Loser'." x(
