For me:

U2 - No Line On The Horizon (heard at their MySpace page - at first I had to get used to it, but it will be a very worthy addition to their library. All That You Can't Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb are classics IMO, but it's nice that U2 did something a little less like the old U2 while still retaining their sound. Think of it in terms of a modern day Achtung Baby that's a little less of a break from tradition.)

Kelly Clarkson - All I Ever Wanted (you can hear it at YouTube song-by-song without having to illegally download - it's more like Breakaway than My December, but a rockier version of Breakaway - amazing CD! She even tackles the punk song "Whyyawannabringmedown.")

The Kinks - The Ultimate Collection (it seems to be their best anthology in the way it doesn't just include big hits. Expensive as an import, though - I got it from a third party through amazon.com)

Their early stuff is a different kind of music. I like KIT and GUS, but Parachute, Goldfly, their earliest work, strike more of an emotional chord with me.

And Lost and Gone Forever was for a long time my favorite ever album. "Happier", "Barrel of a Gun", "Fa Fa", "I Spy", and "Rainy Day" are the four best tracks they've ever laid down, IMHO.

I'd suggest getting their live CD/DVD "Guster on Ice: Live from Portland, Maine". It still knocks me out and I've seen it fifty times.

so far 2009 has been a very good year for music. M. Ward, Animal Collective, Andrew Bird, Dan Auerbach, and Franz Ferdinand have all put out very good ones.

Andrew Bird sounds like checking out for sure. I'm waiting for that Pearl Jam, and the albums by U2, The Decemberists, The Love Willows (now not out until May,) Kelly Clarkson, The New Pornographers, Tori Amos, Wilco, Neko Case, Michelle Branch, Garbage, Indigo Girls, The Like, Stars, Amy Winehouse, The Wrens, Gillian Welch, Stone Temple Pilots, Francisca London, Automatic Loveletter (it's kind of emo, but she has a good sound, so I'll see how much I like it,) Jessica Harp, Kate Voegele, Oh Alexis!, Mandy Moore (yes, she's been mature lately), Peter Bjorn & John, Sara Watkins...

I have her CDs on my iPod and still listen to them pretty often. I wish she wasn't sticking with the country sound. I'm not much of a country fan. I like a few songs but they're more pop/country songs ("Before He Cheats" type songs).

63. I wasn't loving the Wreckers

and I'm not a big fan of "This Way." It seems to lean a little more on the country side than I would like it. I have only 4 "country" songs on my iPod: "Before He Cheats", "Last Name", "So Small" and "Not Ready to Make Nice." Those songs could probably pass as pure pop songs. I'll keep an open mind for Michelle's new CD though...she might surprise me.

67. I do tend to like country more, except..

I'm not as crazy about that honky tonk sound that's been done over and over.. but I still like George Strait, Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, and others. I tend towards The Wreckers, Taylor Swift, Sugarland, The Dixie Chicks, and Brad Paisley among the newer artists and don't follow the country scene as closely. To me, "This Way" sounds more like Michelle's old solo side but with a little steel guitar - personally I don't find it that country - no more than alt-country I guess.

Michelle will have a hard time pleasing all, so maybe she'll include several different styles. :thumbsup:

On Kelly's new CD, there are the big ballads like "Cry," some experimentation like on the song "All I Ever Wanted," and a nice power pop feel on the faster songs. I think you'll enjoy. Kelly's CD is one I was able to pre-order, but the curiosity still got to me. :hi:

I love the first single, even though it's "Since U Been Gone" part 2. Her CD comes out the week before my b-day so I'll probably wait until then. People usually ask me if there's something I want for my b-day and I never know. So Kelly has provided an easy option. I've been tempted to go listen to the CD online but I haven't given in....yet :)

I'm a pop fan. I know pop music, especially today's music, gets looked down on but I love it.

Hope you get the CD for your birthday! Even though "My Life Would Suck Without You" is like Since You Been Gone pt. 2 (but still with a great beat and a fun, rousing chorus,) some of the others sound like Katy Perry but better. Katy Perry even recorded a couple of these songs.

I was pretty disappointed with their last one, but all is better now. I haven't been so in love with an album in years. Easily their best since Achtung baby and maybe their third masterpiece

Of Montreal, Skeletal Lamping. A beter Prince album than Prince himself has made in quite some time, dripping with filthy lyrics, queeny machismo, and dense electrofunk.


Miles Davis, Sketches of Spain. I wouldn't say I have an articulate musical grasp of jazz, but I like how Gil Evans was able to control the orchestra so tightly that it never feels like they're overpowering Davis's horn; it almost feels like the orchestra is gently backing off of its own accord rather than drown him out.


Echo and the Bunnymen, Ocean Rain. A classic of its era, and the expanded reissue has some fun live tracks.

78. The Phish "Roxy" set, disc 1 of Kiss' "Gold", and Cheer-Accident's "Introducing Lemon."

I figured I should finally try listening to some Kiss beyond "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Detroit Rock City" and "Beth." My reaction? A hearty "meh."

The Phish "Roxy" set is from the days when they were still more of a "progressive" group rather than the groove machine they became in the second half of the 1990s. Some brilliant atonal cacophony, some amazing compositions, and sometimes very sloppy playing, too. Still a great listen, though.

Cheer-Accident's "Introducing Lemon" is beyond my ability to explain.
