Does whiskey make good cough syrup?

I opted for a Coricidin. Now I'm regretting my decision.

Oh, and, explain how a person can have the flu & then two weeks later catch a cold. Isn't there a grace period, or something, between illnesses? :-(

1. No it doesn't. It's not an expectorant

To supress coughs, you're gonna want an opiate of some sort, like Codeine, which will supress your nervous system. Whiskey will just get you drunk.

Wondered why the builder who saw my Irish Whiskey on the top shelf of our pantry said, "Oh, I see you have the same cough syrup I have." Guess he was just making a joke. Thanks for answering.

I think it's an old folk remedy, but it doesn't do too much-- it will knock you out eventually, but that's not your goal.

You could do what the badass gangsta rappers in Texas do, and take the Tussionex, mix it with some Sprite and a Jolly Rancher candy and make some Purple Drank. I wouldn't recommend that, though.

13. If you're coughing stuff up, you shouldn't suppress the cough (even if you lose sleep)

because it is getting rid of things that need to be coughed up. Take a syrup with Guaifenesin to help loosen it, and your coughing will not need to be as harsh.

If your cough is dry and hacking, look for something with codeine (which will make you not cough much at all and also knock you out.)

8. Codeine isn't an expectorant either.

I learned from the druggist that there are two kinds of syrup depending on whether one has a chesty cough (full of mucous and shit), or a dry cough. Chesty coughs demand expectorant to help you get that crap out, hacking coughs get codeine to keep you from coughing because the coughing is doing nothing but ripping your throat up. Codeine for a chesty cough is counterproductive as it keeps your body from expelling mucous.

17. When I was a kid, my mom gave us a mixture of whiskey, lemon

juice and honey when we had bad coughs. I can't recall whether it worked or not but it sure was tasty.
