Thanks to the DUers who mentioned "The Paper Bag Princess" last week
The teacher in my daughter’s first grade class does something a little different for student birthdays in her class. Rather than having the kids bring in cupcakes or some other candy (and having to worry about kids with various allergies and then cleaning up afterwards), she has the kids bring in a book to read to the class.

The parents are allowed to go into the class to help their child read as well. Since I was a bit swamped at work, my wife went in to school with my daughter.

Last week I bought the book “The Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch for her to read to the class because her sixth birthday took place on the school vacation week. In a thread about Disney Princesses last week, a few DUers had mentioned the book, and I would like to thank them and say that it went over really well in class.

But, my daughter told the class she was going to ask questions afterwards, so everybody paid attention when she read the book, and she did not need any help from her mommy, either. I guess it all went really well.

2. I like that teacher's idea!
I'll look up "The Paper Bag Princess" at the library.
A book I thought was great when I was six, was "Eloise". It was first published in 1955, but in 1999 "The Absolutely Essential Eloise", with the original "Eloise" and added scrapbook, was published and it can be found on Amazon.

There have been some good kids' book recommendation threads on DU!

3. thanks
good recommendation.

The Paper Bag princess is about a princess who is about to get married, and then a dragon burns down her castle and all her clothes and makes off with the prince. The princess then wears a paper bag, because that is all that is available, and goes off to find the dragon. She then tricks then dragon into exhausting itself, but when she goes to rescue the prince, he gets upset that she doesn't look like a princess... so, she dumps him and they don't get married.

4. OMG I love that book
I bought it for myself (!) but now that he's 5, MG Jr. enjoys it as well. He also loves other Munsch books--you daughter might like them too. He especially likes Thomas' Snowsuit (kid refuses to wear an ugly brown snowsuit his mother buys him), Millicent and the Wind (a girl whose best friend is the wind), and Mortimer (a kid who won't go to sleep).

Munsch is VERY prolific, and his books are just great. :hi:

5. And who could forget "I love you forever". Someone told me about his
books. I bought them for the kids of a friend of mine. Love them.

His other ones make me laugh till I cry. Big difference! But yes, they're all great.
