Divorced DUers: What did you do with your wedding band?
I came across mine in the jewelry box yesterday. What are you supposed to do with these things, anyway?

I thought of having something else made to commemorate the whole debacle, but I can't come up with any ideas.

1. Gold prices are pretty high, but stay away from the mail-it-in rip off companies.

2. Oh, yeah- I'd never consider putting gold in the mail....

That seems remarkably stupid!

And, on edit, I just have the one ring- I was thinking more along the lines of having a jeweler make something else out of it...

3. Yes, melt it down and create something new out of it!
That's what I'm thinking, at least. :hi:

4. Yeah, most wedding sets cost WAY more than the value of the gold.

7. I got mad and gave it a heave......
before we even filed for divorce. Never found it, never cared.

9. Understood...
I considered sacrificing mine to the ocean gods, but it didn't happen....

8. Hey, babe!
That's a good friggin' question - mine has been sitting in my jewelry box for 3 years now.

If you think of something creative, let me know. :hi:

11. I'm drawing a blank....
I may just take it to Mexico with me and throw it into the Pacific ocean with great fluorish and panache (and celebrate it with a bottle of Dom)! It would be cathartic, to be sure, but the practical side of me is balking...

19. That happened to mine
The man who became my real husband - as opposed to the fake first one - and I were out on the boat off Catalina and I was wearing my old wedding band on my right hand. It happened to be a really beautiful thing, didn't much look like a wedding ring, an he asked to see it.

I handed it to him, he said "Don't you think it's time to get rid of this?"

I said, "You know, you're right," knowing what was coming next, and he pitched it into the deep ocean.

It was the perfect thing to do.

20. Cool story!
Sharing the release with your "real husband" made it extra-special.

I'm going on a cruise to Mexico with my semi-significant other in April. Perhaps I'll let him do the honors.

12. Mine's still sitting in the jewelry drawer
somewhere.

Having it melted down into something else is about the best idea. I haven't done so, just because I really forgot about it for a few years. I don't know how much it would cost though.

13. Mine's at the bottom of a drawer
Where it went the day my ex-wife and I separated. In fact, I was just thinking about doing something with it this morning when I was getting ready for work.

I'll probably have it melted down and made into something else. Maybe a pendant of a hand giving the single-finger salute.

15. I sold it to a local gold dealer. Then...
I took the $$$ and bought a new garage door opener.

Every time that door opens...

18. So sell it, and buy something practical....
I could hock mine and get myself a really nice cocktail shaker. So every time I have a drink, I'd be toasting the end of one thing and the beginning of another...

It's something to consider!

16. I saved my engagement ring (solitaire)
for my daughter. My wedding band wasn't worth much as the original, expensive one was stolen years ago.

I don't have a thing insured. I'm "between houses" so to speak and renting from a friend.

Spared me the indignity of pawning it for a song, I suppose.

26. Threw it into a swamp. But I never wore it anyway. I simply cannot stand to wear jewelry. I tried SO
hard to wear the ring when I got married to Mrs R, but just couldn't do it. (Oddly enough for a guy who used to make jewelry for a living, yes?)

28. do you have any children? Save it for them? Hubby gave me a new set
last year for christmas.

Our original was a tiny speck and hubby felt I deserved bigger (I won't complain) and we put our old set in the safe and my daughter can have them if she wants.......

29. Took the diamond out and sold the setting for old gold about 30 years ago.
Bought a modern, twisting design setting for the diamond and added two small ones.

Wore that ring a lot--middle finger right hand--for years until it was lost in the fire that
burned down our house last year.

I considered it my 'evolution' ring.

30. I took a hammer to mine. It made me feel better.
:hi:

My divorce took two years and a drawn out custody battle.

We are very friendly now and both have equal custody.
