Poll question: Best film sword fight
Watching Die Another Day last night and while it's the worst of the Brosnan Bonds it does have a very well choreographed saber duel between Bond and the villain.

I imagine the 'others' category will run away with this one: Braveheart, The Princess Bride, Troy, Three Musketeers, Star Wars, Zorro, numerous foreign language films. There are too many to fit into one ten item list.

25. 2nded (or whatever number we're up to)
also, I thought the best swordfight in Seven Samurai was actually the one duel before they even got to the village, when they were still trying ot hire samurai. The one where someone challenged Kyuzo, and they tried with sticks. They both struck at almost the same time, and Kyuzo said, "I won." The other man disagreed, and challenged him with a real sword.

... after a lot of standing and nerving themselves for it, they repeated the same action. Both swung at almost the same time. Other man fell down dead.

9. YouTube for Rob Roy
The sword fighting sequence, staged by William Hobbs, is the best of its sort ever done. In most movie sword fights, the participants leap about effortlessly, their blades shimmering and clashing. Here we get the sense of the deadly stakes, and the great physical effort involved.

Cunningham chooses a rapier, Rob Roy a broadsword (their weapons reflect their personalities), and the fight is punctuated by passages of dead silence, except for heavy breathing. They become very tired.

They are both wounded. The pauses grow longer, until the duel seems like a chess match in which thought counts for more than action. It is one of the great action sequences in movie history, and "Rob Roy" is a fabulous entertainment.

19. Agreed, if for no other reason than Neeson's dispatching of Roth.
It's classic defiance.

A perfect finish that was true to both characters
Cunningham was cocky and MacGregor was desperate. Otherwise a rapier vs a broadsword duel would have been over in short order and indeed would have been had Archie not chosen to play with and humiliate his opponent.

Any 10 year old who's into flying the way he was s'posed to be would know what to do in a cockpit better than he did. He just hit random buttons and somehow the midichlorians made it all work out. :banghead:
