I hated No Country For Old Men (maybe spoilers)

I hated this movie so bad. I guess I'm a moron or simpleton, but I just didnt get it.
Nor did I think that Bardem (Mr Cattlegun) was such a great actor or great role.

FWIW, I also HATED Burn After Reading.

6. when it's integral to the story it doesn't bother me, when it's gratuitous i don't like it.

not that i love violence or anything but look at a film like Pan's Labyrinth, it was violent but it was part of the story, it's what happened during that era.

12. I love the book and the film

I've been a major McCarthy fan ever since My Good Babuskha gave me Blood Meridian back in 97. I've since read everything that he's written.

He's not for everyone, and some of his quirky choices can seem arbitrary and affected (minimal punctuation, for instance), but I think he's magnificent.

13. I thought the ending was almost poetic.

I had to think about it a lot, and then watch it a second time, but I think I know what the ending meant. In the dream Tommy Lee Jones is talking about at the end he says he heads for the snowy mountains. I think that represent his life as a sheriff. Then he says a man goes on ahead of him, which I think represents the killer awaiting him.

When he wakes up he realized he was in the process of living that dream out, that he was heading for his own death if kept pursuing Chigurh. The scene in the motel where Tommy Lee Jones realizes that Chigurh might be there and could kill him if he wanted to also drove the point home, as does visiting his handicapped friend.

Talking about that dream was his way of saying he recognizes that he's now out of his league, that this new breed of criminal is too much for him (the movie is set in 1980 when drug smuggling was really taking off there). He's the Old Man in the title, and that isn't his country anymore.

I'm not a big movie person so I watched the movie for the sake of watching it. My wife wanted to watch it, she lasted about half an hour before she fell asleep.

I sort of understood the plot but there were scenes that just didn't seem to fit for what I thought the movie was going.

I'll admit I didn't watch Old Country. It looked too intense...not bad, just too much for me at the time...including now.

I'd been kind of growing tired w/ their stuff, but my wife and I took a chance w/ Burn this weekend, and I gotta say, even w/ my skepticism on high, I laughed pretty damn hard. To me, a pretty scathing parody of American middle age...it hit colse to home, but I appreciated the comedic insights, too.

Great rhythm, too: right after my wife said "We don't really know what she does, do we?" they cut to her in her office and revealed her occupation. Perfect....

Not to argue, but what don't you like about Burn and the CoBros in general? Too mean-spirited?

I didn't care so much that he got killed as much as the graphic portrayal.

They could have shown the whole thing from like the side angle, with Clooney shooting then his gaze slowly following Pitt down to the floor. George with that befuddled look on his face and the shooting off-camera. Would have preserved the farce a lot better.

maybe you'll at least appreciate what the Coens and McCarthy were going for better if you:

-Understand Anton = Death
-Draw the parallel between Anton and Ed Tom's father, and the journey

If it had ended satisfyingly, it would've turned into just another crime film with no depth to it.

Just say you don't understand it. No shame in that, it was a strange film with a message you had to be in to to get. If you got it, it was one of the most brilliant films in years. If not, it probably was pretty dull.

And Burn After Reading was not one of their better works. Might have been their worst. I didn't dislike it, but it just seemed a retread of a bunch of devices they've used before. Then again, they meant it to be a minor release, and admitted it wasn't one of their best.
