I am watching the History International channel, and it's been Nostradamus' new found book with pictures predicting 2012 as the end of the world, the Mayan calendar ends 12-21-12, shift in earth' axis, the antichrist, meteors, and flooding along with famine all occuring at once.....what do you think will happen 12-21-12?

1. On 12-21-2012...
I'll be in my usual annual panic, trying to get the Christmas shopping done.

My conspiracy theory friend has been talking this one up a lot. However, he's been dead wrong on the other 4 or 5 ends of the world that have happened in the years I've known him.

I don't buy it.

no one will be buying xmas presents because they think it's the end of the world, why bother....when the sun rises the next day it will probably be the biggest shopping day in history.

26. Oh, lord. During the whole Y2K hysteria
I had a boss who swore that those of us who knew DOS should keep up on it because it would be just as useful as COBOL was for those of us computer folks who could retire doing COBOL programming because of the Y2K panic.

While I'm sure I could get back to remembering DOS on the fly, I have no illusions that I'll ever get rich off it.

OTOH, too bad I was slightly too young to have learned COBOL for any practical reason. I might be posting from some island in the Bahamas instead of a shitty one-bedroom apartment in West Virginia.

I don't even have to bother to look at what the latest bullshit is about the "end of the world," because it's all bullshit.

Why?

Because I am immortal. I will never die. I will outlive the cockroaches. The worst part is that those lucky little bastards aren't expected to be pleasant and friendly when everyone hates them. The world will never end. It's not going to happen. Y'all are stuck here with my sorry loser ass. Welcome to Hell. :evilfrown:

45. J.P. Sartre did say "Hell is other people."
I've argued before that life on Earth is nothing more than one staging of No Exit on a massive scale.

Nothing is happening on 12/21/2012 for a simpler reason...the Mayans viewed "ends of the world" as cyclical as opposed to permanent events. It's not like the world is ending for the first time here. Think epoch-change not Armageddon.

22. Exactly. It marks the end of the "Great Year" of the Precession ...
... and the Dawn of the Age of Aquarius, to folks not familiar with things Cosmological.

I've always had a hard time explaining it, but google 'Precessesion of the Equinox' and you should get some hits that explain it. Here's the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precession_(astronomy)

What fascinates me is how so many ancient societies knew about it without having "advanced" astronomical/ cosmological tools.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uij4aMltziw

I am still living with your ghost
lonely and dreaming of the west coast
I don't want to be your down time
I don't want to be your stupid game
with my big black boots and an old suitcase
I do believe I'll find myself a new place
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to see some palm trees
I will try to shake away this disease

We can live beside the ocean
Linger far behind
Swim out past the breakers and
Watch the world die x

I am still dreaming of your face
hungry and hollow from the pain you took away
I don't want to be your good time
I don't want to be your fallback crutch anymore
Walk right up you brand new day
your same horizon in my own wearedway
I don't want to be the bad guy
I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore
I just want to feel some downside
I just want to find some place to be alone

We can live beside the ocean
Linger far behind
Swim out past the breakers and
Watch the world die x4

Ooh! yeah, watch the world die!
Yeah, yeah watch the world die!
Wooah, yeah, watch the world die!
Yeah...watch the world die!!!!

I really think that no one is certain as to what will happen.
We just have to wait and see.

As for myself, I think the Mayans used up all of the space for their calendar and therefore said that it is the end of it... the calendar.

37. The cycle begins again
For the Mayans and the Aztecs.

Years are reckoned in bundles, not cycles.

And each year bundle is roughly 492 years, corresponding to a cycle between the Earth, Venus, and the Sun.

The end of the last bundle was 1520, the fall of Tenochtitlan.

The problem is they were only looking at probable outcomes with in the standard deviation. No one was looking at, what they called, the Black Swan. As in what are the chances of a Black Swan. They rated their portfolios based on this matrix and would analyze it by the hour.

A few weeks back, the NYT Sunday Magazine did a great article about the whole way Wall Street managed risk. It's a great article.
