This was a 36 in RCA it kept me company for years. It would probably cost 3-4 hundred to repair it. I've had Toshiba before and they were junk. I'm looking for one of them new flat screens maybe 42in to hang on the wall. I don't have a fortune to spend. I am reduced to an 8 in mini on my office bookshelf.

2. I have a Vizio that I like a lot.
I think the most current (or maybe the month prior) Consumer Reports has a section on TVs.

10. The March 09 CR has that section, sir, you're correct.
It's on my coffee table as we speak.

3. Stick with a name brand you recognize.
Sony,Panasonic,LG, Toshiba and Samsung are the main ones now. Anythng else and you might be out of luck for parts when the warranty runs out.

4. We have a Vizio
It's almost a year old now. We really enjoy it. Plus, with the way the prices are dropping, you'll get one for at least a couple of hundred bucks less than we spent.

You might try Costco if you have one close by; you can contrast and compare to your heart's content. ;-)

The other LCD is an Olevio, which has also been good.

AVS Forum - http://www.avsforum.com/ - is a good place to read user reviews of TVs and home entertainment systems. Be warned - they are very serious home theatre types. But they have threads dedicated to specific models of lots of brands so you can see what problems have been found with those models.

6. The best deal in flat screen is Samsung.
My Dad has a 42" LCD of theirs, and the picture is beautiful.

7. do a little looking on the inner-tubes before you walk into a store
maybe get some idea what might be available in your price range.
With the economy down, you might be able to score a good bargain.
We got a good deal a Xmas. If my wife had to decide between me and the TV, I'd be gone.
