3. I know, it's silly but this is the first time I have ever lived alone
I mean as the only adult, and I have never lived in the country before, I just need to get used to it, but I would give my left arm for a little traffic noise!!! :hi:

5. The wind scares me too, but
I wouldn't trade the scenery, the critters, and the peace and quiet, of living away from the city now that I have tasted fresh air and solitude.

Like I said, the wind scares the living daylights out of me because I live in a home not meant to withstand high winds, but it's so beautiful out here.

As long as you are only getting used to the country, and it's just the wind and not too incredibly strong, you'll do fine. Do you know the wind gust speeds where you are right now? Steady wind speed? I can give you a clue as to when to really worry. I'm a wind watcher, obsessively, because it's my biggest fear...being made homeless due to a tornado or hurricane by the wind and all.

6. I live in the city and the wind howls here, too.
I don't like it in the winter. Summer is OK. Unless it starts to roar instead of howl and that means tornado. I kind of like the wind.

9. Don't worry, the restless dead rarely try to enter occupied homes
they're content to howl outside. It's rare they actually try anything more than that.

10. Ya know....
some of you are just plain EVIL! Thankfully we are no where near the beast of Bray road territory, but Bigfoot and Banshees are all too common in this neck of the woods!

13. Don't worry, Bigfoot and the Banshees are touring out west
I think they had a gig in Minot last night, so they're far, far away.

Plus, who the hell wants to walk around in 8" of snow on a windy February night? All the smart predators are curled up in their dens, sleeping it off. :)

11. First time ever in your life, or just your adult life?
Don't worry, the wind is your friend (unless a cylone or hurricane). What about thunderstorms? A lot of people are frightened by that but I think they're awesome and spectacular especially if there's lots of lightning flashing about. But yes, the wind can sound like a monsters trying to get into your house. Crank up your stereo to cover it.

12. I love the sound of the howling, screaming wind.
I'm still afraid of the dark though. Go figure.

15. Me too!
I sleep with a night light and my evil spawn make fun of me for it! I love thunderstorms and the wind has never bothered me before, maybe it was being alone in a new place in the middle of no where and latent fear that my STB ex-husband somehow found out where I was, or, maybe I am just a fraidy cat :P

19. Heh... same here...
I use a nightlight, but thankfully my kids are the same so they can't make fun of me. :P

I bet it's just being in a new place and newly on your own... either way I hope you enjoy the thunderstorms. Those are my favorite. :)

14. You'll hear all sorts of things
I live in the country too. Because there is no background city hum, lots of normal noises are more pronounced out here:

The wind, which you've noted.

House creaking and settling with the changing seasons (wood expands and contracts with the seasons)

Dogs barking or howling (more rarely, it could by a coyote or a wolf depending on how far out you are), cats and other animals passing beneath your open window. :D

Birds calling. You will get familiar with them, just by their songs.

The sound of rain on a tin roof is lovely.

Glad you are safe.

17. Girlfriend - you're freaking me out!
I moved out to the country after the ex and I broke up. We now live in a farmhouse in the middle of 150 acres of farmland. OLD house. Lots of creaks. Howling wind.

It takes some getting used to, but you'll actually learn to enjoy it. It's kinda cool. :) :hi:

21. I grew up next to a freeway.
For many years I couldn't understand why I never felt comfortable visiting my Grandparent's house which was in a secluded area. I finally realized one day that the reason I was uneasy was the lack of white noise from the distant freeway. Imagine that, I couldn't stand peace and quiet!

What you are feeling is perfectly natural, especially considering the massive changes your life is undergoing. You will adapt to your surroundings, it takes time, but you will learn what sounds are normal, and the rhythms of your new life will come to you. Take it a day at a time, and you'll be ok.

:hi:
