Name 3 shows you think ended too soon...
1) Avatar: The Last Airbender. 3 seasons. Not enough. I loved the show and it was very well done, but it could easily have gone a bit longer.

2) Angel: The last season was amazing. I did not care for what happened to Fred, but the season itself was terrific. It finally hit a stride and they pulled the rug out.

3) Buffy The Vampire Slayer: I'll be the first to admit, the last 2 seasons were very weak. The final episode too short. The way Sarah Michelle Gellar handled the end of the series too asinine. The show had great moments, though. Probably more than most other shows. If Joss had picked up the writing reins again, I think the show could have found its way back to what it used to be.

1. The original Star Trek TV series - the five year mission only made it 3 seasons.

4. It was three seasons - does that count?
Edited on Fri Feb-27-09 11:14 AM by HopeHoops
I mean what was I supposed to add to it - "Three's Company" or "The Partridge Family"? There just haven't been that many good TV shows. M*A*S*H at least lasted long enough that I can't include it in the list.

On edit:
Besides, my reason for "why it ended too soon" wasn't even a statement of worthiness - it was that it only lasted three years when it was a five year mission - that was too soon!

86. The series made no claim of a 1:1 correspondence between seasons and years
Each season could easily, on average, have represented one year and eight months...

The only problem, then, is that we don't get to see the "decommissioning" episode at the end, so maybe the mission ran for four years and eleven and a half months?

If you can stand the animated series. It was, with a few very rare exceptions, embarassingly bad.

17. I have mixed feelings about the west wing ending
I would've loved to have seen the Santos administration, but you would've run the risk of repeating plot lines and whatnot. Plus, we fell in love with the Bartlet Administration and I'd hate to have seen a situation where the Bartlet years are lost after we've gone through a second, third, or fourth different president.

48. I'm not sure about the West Wing
After Sorkin left the show, the episodes involving the actual Administration were weak and somewhat lackluster. Season 5 and some of Season 6 had some extremely bad characterizations, continuity holes and weak plots that were almost painful to watch. The series improved dramatically of course with the election episodes -they were classic, very well-written and well-done episodes -but it was still largely hit and miss with the episodes involving the Bartlett Administration

So, yes, I would've loved to have seen President Santos and the Santos Administration (which allegedly was meant to be the Vinick Administration before John Spencer's devastating, tragic and untimely passing). But having said that, I'm not sure how they would've gone writing the episodes involving the Santos Administration.

7. I'm not a big fan of television.
But these shows I thought were quite entertaining and I wish they had continued:

1) Wondershowzen. I can't begin to even describe this show. It's filled with puppets, children, and weird drug references. It managed to last 2 seasons on MTV.

2) Mr. Show. Sketch comedy at it's finest. The closest to Monty Python Americans will ever get. HBO axed the show in 4 seasons because The Sopranos stole all the thunder, and rightfully so. Still, I could have handled another 2 or 3 seasons from Bob and David.

3) Liquid Television. MTV went from bad to awful in the late 80s/early 90s. Somehow, someone had enough brains to air Liquid Television which was an hour long show, on late at night, featuring animation shorts. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes funny, sometimes just outright sick. Regardless, it was NEVER dull. A little trivia: Beavis and Butthead first debuted on Liquid Television with an animation short called 'Frog Baseball'.

Carnivale: Ended with no resolution whatsoever.

Deadwood: Petered out due to costs.

Phantom 2020: Never had a chance and I should be glad they managed to make as many as they did.

I would include Futurama but the direct to DVD route is working. I am afraid they will stop once they can strip them into episodes and make a proper syndication package but there is always hope they will continue.

My favorite episode is when he has a time machine and he tries to fix his landlord's life. The details are fuzzy, but I remember someone coming out of the garage and screaming, 'your cockfights suck, you pansy,' which might be the greatest line ever written for network television.

The key is had Josh picked up the writing reigns. He clearly had moved on.

She seems to think she doesn't need it, either.

I lost any respect for her when she backed out on an episode of Angel that she had all but committed to do. It was kind of a slap in the face for those fans she actually had.

Oh, and Season 6 staked it for me. The interminable angsty woe is me I died and got brought back and blah blah blah. I trudged through 7 because I had hoped it would get better.

there were four episodes that never aired, and the episodes that were aired were aired out of order.

Where did whatsisname go? Who's this other guy? How can Ben see Merlin? When did those two get together? When did those other two get together? How did whatsisname decide to accept his destiny? And is Selina really going to tap that?

Watching them all in sequence really helps with the continuity. :D

That, and freeze/skip problems were the only complaints I saw in the Amazon review section I just looked at.

A lot of people commented on the order issue. Here is the proper order, FYI:

INTENDED EPISODE ORDER: 01. Pilot, 02. A Tree Grows in Trinity, 03. Eye of the Beholder, 04. Damned if You Don't, 05. Potato Boy, 06. Dead to the World, 07. Meet the Beetles, 08. Strong Arm of the Law, 09. To Hell and Back, 10. The Beast Within, 11. Rebirth, 12. Ring of Fire, 13. Resurrector, 14. Inhumanitas, 15. The Plague Sower, 16. Doctor Death Takes a Holiday, 17. "On January 15, 2009, Executive Producer Jon Turteltaub announced that he is developing a feature film version of the series."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_(TV_series)

I hope it's true. :)

41. The ending of Angel was too rushed.
Edited on Fri Feb-27-09 01:41 PM by Lucian
I agree, the show ended too early. I think Buffy ended at the right time.

Futurama is another show that ended too early. When the show started getting good, they pulled the plug. Gah.

83. In case you didn't know...
In the comic book version of Angel, Wesley came back as a ghost. A bit contrived for me, since they pretty much did the same thing with Spike for a while, but I was just glad Mr. Wyndham-Price didn't just shuffle off.

Twin Peaks and American Gothic.

Sam Raimi and Shaun Cassidy bring you the tale of a Sheriff (played by Gary Cole) who might just be the devil himself.

That was a funny show, and features a lot of current Apatow regulars.

I'd say "Arrested Development" but they tied it up so well at the end that I think the three very fresh seasons it got were just perfect.

60. 1. Millennium, 2. Greg the Bunny, 3. Harsh Realm
Millennium was especially good, even though it suffered in the second season from trying to build up a huge mythology in too short a time.

Greg the Bunny was hilarious.

And Harsh Realm's concept was one that I would have loved to seen explored more thoroughly.

I also am still miffed that Invasion got canned. That show had promise.

69. I must agree with you about Avatar.
That was just a fantastic series, and was very well done. I always thought their would be a fourth book, named Air, so I thought ending with the third book was odd. The second half of the third season, although it was incredible, felt rushed to me. Compared to the amount of time he had to spend mastering waterbending and earthbending, Aang mastered firebending WAAAAAYYY too quickly. It just seemed like the creators were hurrying up to finish the series, and I think there was enough of a story there to take it out for another season.

But I did love the series, and I watched it religiously from beginning to end. That was the best show Nickelodeon has produced in quite a while. :hi:

82. The Wire,Deadwood,Carnivale. Ironically, all HBO shows, which has been the benchmark for TV drama
for a number of years.

David Simon said he wanted a five year run for The Wire and he got it so I just personally hated that the show had come to an end. They did short Season Five two episodes, though.Originally scheduled for 13,they cut it to 11.

Deadwood should have run longer, but there was at least a resolution to the show.

Just dropping Carnivale cold was inexcusable.

117. I'll agree with that one big time!
The DC animated universe has gone steadily downhill ever since the end of JLU. JLU is one of my all time favorite shows - very deep and well written for a cartoon. Now we have the not-even-close-bordering-on-horrible Batman the Brave and the Bold. WTF. Batman is sooooo not the character they portry in B:BatB - he's much more of a loner. At any rate I agree and would have loved to have seen more JLU. The direct-to-video "Justice League: The New Frontier" was quite good. :)

131. (1 Crazy Like a Fox, with Jack Warden.
(Sunday nights, CBS.) Loved that show, but CBS moved it from its Sunday slot to different days and times so that even I couldn't find it, and my job was writing about CBS! :-(

(2 Joan of Arcadia (Friday nights, CBS): Great cast, original premise. I made my friend watch the season finale with me because I thought it would be scary, Joan vs. the devil. But the whole show just built up to the confrontation, guess they planned to show the battle in the season premiere, but it never happened. My friends and I even wrote to the network. :-(

(3 WIOU (Wednesday nights, CBS): An original show about the inner workings of a TV newsroom. I loved the characters and even got my cousin and her fellow staff members at a Denver TV newsroom hooked on it, and they were an NBC affiliate. But CBS pulled it with two or three episodes that were never shown... :-(

I can think of more, but I miss these three the most.

I'd love to know how EZ Streets was supposed to end, but Paul Haggis won't tell (it took me years to finally get to see the last made episode).

Deadwood - what a bummer. The last season was fabulous.

As for some of the other shows, Hill Street Blues and The Wire ran their course and if the The Wire had went on, it only would have jumped the shark.

It's really good and when you watch it, I bet you'll wonder how and the heck network tv is so messed up that they let this show fail.

148. The Young Ones, USA Night Flight, Police Squad.
Television greatness. An utter crime that Night Flight got replaced by that unfunny fuckbag Gilbert Gotttttttttfried. Makes me want to type in fragments. That is.

150. Twin Peaks, Wonderfalls, Millennium
"Millennium" was canceled, I believe, before the millennium arrived, which was what it was building up to. Not good.
Also, "Invasion" -- the show that used to be on after "Lost". That was another one that was building up to some big revelation, then poof, it was gone before we found out what it was.

151. Veronica Mars.
Veronica Mars

Veronica Mars

Such a fine, well-written show, with a kick-ass female protagonist. Makes me sick they cancelled it, while so much stupid insipid drivel goes on year after year after year. It was a gazillion times more intelligent than most of the dreck out there.
ACK.
