3. I shut off the TV in 82 - and it was 100% that sucked then - something must have improved!
Ah, and Pink Floyd's "The Wall" - "I got 13 channels of shit on the TV to choose from."

Now it is what, 500 channels of shit?

6. You aren't missing a single thing.
I watch only 3 shows on the 'main networks' (none on the other channels) and even those... well, I'll acknowledge that they suck too.

11. I thought Rome would be about Roman history.
Instead it turned into softcore porn... and sorry, but I'm just not into porn. :(

20. It was a BBC show from the 70's
The show plays like a stage play - but its very good

You will find all kinds of Shakespearean heavies in it. Patrick Stewart (with hair!) is in it.

26. They did.
First historical about Rome I've seen that went into the day-to-day life of plebeians, re Lucius and Niobe. I thought the dynamics between master and slaves was especially interesting, much more complex than most historicals show.

As for war not only important battles we got to see tactics, strategies, rank structure and the relationships within it, all in all a good primer on how the Rome army functioned.

Art: The set dressing caught Rome art, what there was. Rome's forte was engineering and architecture. Its visual art was a redo of classical Greek.

Philosophy: It was there as motivation. For example, the concept of mercy. Mercy wasn't a virtue to the Romans; it was a humiliation, a slap down. Caesar publicly humiliated Brutus and Cicero when he forgave them after their surrender and why he went off at Lucius for setting Pompey free.

Redemption was not a religious concept; it was regaining honor and status which is why following Niobe's death Marc Antony told Lucius when he told him pull himself together and start acting like a soldier again, the only way to redeem himself.

FWIW

5. I know it.
History Channel, Discovery, A&E, and TLC were fairly good in the beginning. Nowadays, they feature loads of crap that aren't worth anyone's time. Iceroad truckers anyone?
