DU needs new moderators
We are approaching the end of the longest (and undoubtedly the toughest) mod term ever at DU. The current term ends this week, and we're looking for volunteers to help us out for the next two months.

Now that primary season is, for the most part, behind us, we think this would be a good opportunity to bring on as many new moderators as possible. We hope to retain a number of veteran mods to provide experience and help train the new folks, but this term we are looking for plenty of new faces. So if you've never served before, please sign up.

Please check your schedule for the next two months. While we hope that this term will be a little easier than the last one, DU is bigger and busier than ever and we're looking for dedicated people who have a little extra time on their hands. If you expect to be unavailable for an extended period of time during the next two months, please do not sign up this term.

Here are some things to bear in mind before you apply:

- Your political ideology is not important... We need centrists and leftists and everyone in between to serve as moderators.
- We prefer people who have been members for a few months, and have made at least a couple hundred posts. You must be at least 18 years old.
- You must be able to log on to DU regularly, and should not take any long vacations between now and mid-May.
- We prefer people with a generally positive outlook on life, who can be fair and evenhanded, and who don't get easily frustrated. If you sign up to moderate, we expect you to stay as a moderator for the full two-month term. You must understand that it is perfectly normal for the admins to occasionally overturn your decisions, or to make specific requests regarding the manner in which you participate on DU while you are a moderator.
- We prefer that moderators avoid highly controversial topics, or at least moderate their behavior significantly when participating in such discussions. If you have been an outspoken partisan for any particular Democratic presidential candidate, of if you have a history of rhetorically hot postings on controversial issues, we may not choose you to serve.
- If you know that you aren't very good at controlling your behavior or your emotions, or if you know that you can't be fair to a particular group of people, please do not sign up to be a moderator. There is no obligation to serve as a mod, and we won't hold it against you if you choose not to.

Here's how to volunteer:

Send an email to admin@democraticunderground.com with the word "moderator" in the subject line. Include the following information:

- Your real name
- Your forum username
- Your address
- Your telephone number
- How much time you spend on Democratic Underground
- Which forums you'd like to moderate (if you have a preference)
- A brief statement which generally outlines your political views
- Are you taking any extended vacations during the the next two months?
- Have you read, and do you agree to follow, the Message Board Rules and the Moderator Guidelines?

If you have applied to be a moderator before, but were not chosen, we strongly encourage you to apply again. If you apply but are not selected this time, please don't be offended. We typically have a fairly large number of applicants, and we obviously can't pick everyone who applies.

We hope to select a new group of moderators on Wednesday afternoon, March 10. There will be a free conference call for the new moderators on Thursday night, March 11.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in this thread.

9. Well, proud patriot
that's probably because you have ten times the patience and sense of fairness that I do. You probably go whole days without reading posts that make you want to take a sledgehammer to your own computer. Wish I did. :evilfrown:

You mods are the best people on this whole board, and I love you all, and I wish I had the temperament to be a mod, but I don't!! :hi:

6. it's an amazing experience
I've loved every minute of modding, working in tandem with a collection of the best people you're every likely to serve with, and knowing that I am contributing in my own way to a great cause.

Please volunteer. DU needs you!

11. Its a great way to give back to DU
and you get some nifty insights into the way the board works and a tiny bit of a glimpse into all the crap that Skinner, EGray and Elad deal with.

You work with super neato-keen people and if you've never gotten many PM's before you suddenly get a bunch. It rocks - try it, its only for 2 mos - hey, thats what they told me!

12. The mods all rock!
:yourock: You guys are so awesome!! I don't know how they could pick better ones than the current crop. In fact, the whole idea is a little scary.

If I win the lottery tomorrow night, I will donate enough to DU to make you all paid employees and then we can keep the Supremely Awesome mods we have now!!! :D :D :D :D :D

19. I agree…

Although it can from time to time be a quite daunting and challenging experience –especially during dramatic events and circumstances –I also find it to be very rewarding and very fulfilling and a lot of fun. You become very close to your fellow moderators during the months that you are in a position to moderate and you forge some very close and enduring friendships. You are provided with an insight into how much responsibility and commitment running DU involves and you also see how patient, tolerant, compassionate and exceedingly fair people the DU administrators –although this is evident on the message board every day and reflected through the decisions and initiatives that they take.

I was a moderator moderator for four terms now and I have enjoyed it every time

13. Try it! You know you want to do it.
It is a tough job but it is also a fun job and it is a great way to get to know your fellow DUers. You will never fully understand how this site works unless you work as a moderator.

18. Thank you to all the present mods
For their patience, commitment, dedication, sense of fairness and excellent moderating skills over the past few months –it has been profoundly valued and appreciated on my part and I’m sure on the part of most DU’ers here. As a former mod I can testify to the fact that moderating is very challenging and daunting –although also very rewarding –and the past four months must have been very stressful and demanding to say the least. Thank you and congratulations for making DU such a wonderful and rewarding place to be and for your commitment, dedication and effort in achieving this outcome! Well done! :toast::toast::toast:

Seriously, moderating is a wonderful experience and I encourage everyone to try it!!! You'll come away with a deeper appreciation for DU and better manners!!! :7

22. A big thanks to you and all the other mods, MrsGrumpy!
All of you did a great job during a long and difficult term! DU has come out of things fine - that's all the evidence I need. I applied for this next term, but I had to tell them about my week-long vacation coming up sometime during the term - so we'll see if that affects things.
