A few months ago, I posted about my mother and her health. For the last year and a half, my mother has been battling peritoneal cancer (related to ovarian cancer) and this is her 3rd bout with cancer (two previous bouts with breast cancer). It was stage three and pretty advanced, and she had to undergo surgery, and two different Chemotherapy regimes, and the second was pretty brutal. After the surgery, the doctors were upbeat, because the cancer was fairly well concentrated in one area and they were able to remove a part of her peritoneal cavity known as the omentum in doing so eliminated the largest masses. The remaining masses were smaller than the threshold for removal, and they were confident that they would respond to a less toxic chemo regime. But after 6 months of that regime, some of the masses were still present and the more toxic regime was used.
That regime finished right before Thanksgiving, and we have been waiting for my mom to be healthy enough to go in for the tests to determine how well that regime worked. Well last Friday, she had a CT scan and the doctors proclaimed that for the moment, she is disease free, and they are cautiously optimistic that she has beaten it! She had the port where they administered her chemo into her abdomen removed and we went out for a celebratory dinner at her favorite restaurant on Sunday.
My mom, who had been pretty depressed, and had a pretty grim view of her prognosis was smiling, and I mean REALLY smiling, not the brave trooper smile she had been wearing for a year and a half.
So please, everyone, take a moment to raise a glass to the incredible woman who raised me. This round is on me, for all the positive energy and prayers and good vibrations all you wonderful people here at DU sent her way.
