I'd like to thank Susan Boyle for giving me one more thing to add to my list of things I hope my hypothetical daughters get to see some day. The list now has four items:
-Susan Boyle... makes some assholes realize that women over forty deserve respect too regardless of whether or not they shoot paralyzing toxins into their face
-Rabbit Proof Fence... one of the painfully few mainstream-ish movies with young female heroines doing something besides shopping, having slumber parties or running away from serial killers
-Animal Cops... which has some great older, not conventionally attractive women doing a tough, confrontational job with more grace than I would ever be able to muster
-The Lion in Winter... because Katherine Hepburn is the shit
Surely, however, pop culture of the past forty years has turned up more than four examples of strong female role models. So, if the mood strikes you, please name some TV moments, shows or movies in the past forty years that you think would contribute positively to your daughters' (or sons') idea of what being female is all about.
