The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 4/20/09

[BlueIris]

"Things"

Things have their own lives here. The hall chairs
count me as I climb the stairs. The piano
is playing at will from behind three potted plants,
while the photograph of the dead girl in the luminescent hat
glows pink since the lamp lighted itself at four.

We are very human here. Of course people
go off course sometimes, radio to the outside world
only through typewriter noise or the bathwater running.
And then the empty glasses, the books on health food left around...
But the things have been here longer than we have.

And the trees are older even than the furniture.
They were here to witness the original drownings
(because I always think the children drowned, no matter what you say.)
Last night a voice called me from outside my door.
It was no one's voice, perhaps it came from the umbrella stand.
