Whoa! I went to school with that guy!
On the cover of the free newspaper they distribute in the metro every weekday, a photo of a guy who looked kinda familiar. Turns out we went to school together my last two years here before I went to the States. Turns out he's a musician and actor of notoriety, and he started his career the year after I left.

Has anybody seen my yearbook? :P

How about you? Anyone from your past turn up in the media?

3. I went to school with Daniel La Plante, who raped and murdered a pregnant mother...
... then drowned her two daughters, ages 5 and 7, back in '87.

That's my brush with fame, I guess. :(

4. My high school graduating class included
Former Senator George "Macaca" Allen - who was a racist asshole even back then, as well as Daulton Lee, who was involved in a well-publicized espionage case back in the 70's. He was the "snowman" of The Falcon and the Snowman fame, played in the movie by Sean Penn.

12. Yes, Kevin Sorbo
His father was my eighth grade science teacher, and the whole family attended our church.

Also, I knew sci fi/fantasy writers S.N. Lewitt and Esther M. Friesner in graduate school.

15. Mostly college--John Podesta ; Obama's transition chief (etc) was a friend of mine, and his roommate
Barry Bearak, who was one of my best friends there ( met John through him) won a Pulitzer in international reporting from Afghanistan( NY Times, about 6 years ago)and some of you may remember reading of his arrest and short time in jail last year in Zimbabwe, courtesy of the Mugabe regime. A high school friend, Mandy Jones, was Miss USA, and runner up to Miss Universe, in '73 ( found out years later she'd apparently been the commissioner's wife on Chickenman , which some of you older and midwestern DUers may remember. ( radio parody of Batman). I haven't seen any of these people in eons; Barry is the only one I occasionally keep in touch with, but to this day, it cracks me up to see John on TV being interviewed as a major heavyweight in American politics. Not that he wasn't a brilliant and focused guy back then, but still, when your personal memories of someone are frozen in time as just another goofy ( albeit, again, focused and brilliant ) college kid, it just, I don't know, seems sort of surreal.

17. a guy I dated a few times
is now a central figure in a major federal fraud case. Every couple of months when I read the old hometown news I run across another story about the case. Weird.

We ran into each other a few laters, when I was still in college and he had graduated and was with the family business (the same one which now is the target of a federal case involving the alleged fraud of nearly 250 million bucks), and he struck me as still "cute" but sorta clueless in a box of rocks sort of way.

fame. Didn't ever know him, though.

Would rather be able to say I had a connection to him than to the alleged fraudster.

It's not really surprising though...in HS when everybody else was getting a first job flipping burgers, CJ got one as an columnist/reviewer for Fangoria.
