Why doesn't the United States have an official composer laureate?
We've had unofficial poets laureate since 1937, and official ones since 1986. Yet, to date, no musical equivalent.

I suppose that John Williams commissioned inaugural riff on "Simple Gifts" could be construed as giving him the nod for the position.

Personally, I would have preferred someone like John Adams. I guess we're just lucky that we didn't get the guy who wrote, "My Bologna Has a First Name, It's O-S-C-A-R...".

And, what about the other branches of the arts? Why no choreographer laureate...no performance artist laureate?
