My most recent client proves you can be an attorney AND a lying P.O.S.

Told me Friday that he was sending my final payment for the Web Site I designed.

Emailed me today...after the check didn't arrive yesterday...and said "I wrote the check, but I want to hold off on mailing it until the site goes live."

I reminded him that he agreed to send the payment on Friday, and that the reason the site hasn't gone live is that the guy who did his previous site dicked around on the domain transfer...which is clearly spelled out in my contract as a courtesy to my clients but NOT my responsibility.

We went back and forth on a couple of emails and he finally said "OK, I'll mail it tomorrow."

Fucking ASSHOLE.

It wasn't the fact that I told him I am a sole proprietor and it's the first of the month and sitting on the check he already promised me is KILLING me.

It was when I politely pointed out the fact that the difference between us is that I keep my word 100% of the time.

This guy lives in a big house on the top of a hill that's gotta be worth several million bucks, even in the current economy, and he attempted to bone me over $500.

...believe it or not, he's also my best friend. Has given me support and advice that's gotta be worth thousands at his hourly rate. Met with me last week to discuss my business and when I got to his office said "Let's go" and I said "What are you talking about" and he told me to drive to my favorite Japanese restaurant, where he bought lunch.

My attorney is the good needle in the shit haystack.

if they can get a retainer from their clients, they can pay me on retainer. If/when they refuse, I tell them good luck with some other loser and more times than not they pay to play.

I make all my clients pay me on retainer. I've been burned before but never again. I really like doing a cash only business as well. I havent taken credit cards in more than a year and I refuse to start work on a job until the check has cleared. I usually take it to their bank before I start.

I have several friends who are lawyers, and most of them are very good, honest lawyers to boot. One's an immigration attorney, one works in state government in human services, one is a lobbyist for small towns and cities at the state legislature, and one is a *cough* personal injury lawyer.

I've dealt with lawyers off and on for the past 20 years. I was a PoliSci major in college (political theory), and most of my classmates were pre-law. In fact I just got done writing a personal reference for a very good friend who will be taking the bar exam in the next couple months.

particularly when they're the first line of defense for so many of us. Political theory was half of my double major; journalism was the other half. No fewer than 10 practicing lawyers are among my dearest friends; they're warriors for justice and I respect them more than I could ever express.

Hell, I get government worker jokes all the time. There are bullet holes in my building, not more than 100 feet from where I work, because some jackass didn't think he should pay child support.

And don't even get me started on working for the welfare department, at a time when more and more people are looking to scapegoat the poor for their own problems. Our budget it about to get shredded because a few rich people don't think they need to pay taxes. We're losing staff, and are using outdated and antiquated equipment we are expected to keep running until "things get better". Public employees in my state are scapegoated as being overpaid and underworked. Of course, those same people don't see me logging in on weekends, without pay, just to make sure things are still running

Sorry everybody is taking things the wrong way. Maybe it's because I'm used to being disparaged in my job by most people I know-- even the so-called liberals who believe in the government. I've developed a very thick skin, and I assumed others had done the same.

17. I wouldn't call Johnnie Cochran a jackass

He was inspired by Thurgood Marshall to become a lawyer and has been a fantastic one ever since. If you use Oj Simpson as the basis for your opinion look at other cases such as Abner Louima. He took on police brutality on a number of occasions and I have a high respect for anyone who defends the rights of the accused. It was clear in a number of cases such as Michael Jackson that he/she was wrongly accused and successfully defended them. If I was accused of something I would most likely look for a Cochran protege if I could afford it.

And I've known plenty of lawyers. I went to college with a horde of pre-law students, most of whom became lawyers. One of my best friends is taking the bar in a couple months. I work with attorneys on a daily basis at my job.

I'm a civil servant. I work in the IT division of the welfare department. These days, with all the anti-government, anti-tax talk, I collect more shit in one day than a manure catcher. I have a target on my back from everyone. My building has been shot at by assholes who don't think they need to pay their child support. The bullet holes were there as a reminder for weeks before the glass was replaced.

So please, don't bother. I said I was sorry elsewhere. If you can't laugh at the assholes in your own profession I feel sorry for you.

...a big part of my problem with this is that I had him on the phone and I asked "could you please put the check in the mail TODAY" and he said "Yes" and then deliberately did not do it and waited two days to tell me and I had to debate him and basically shame him into keeping his word.

Just the kind of guy you'd want going to court for you.

And the bigger problem I have with this is that by doing his Web Site, I am indirectly encouraging people to pay for his services.
