Rubber Soul: Most underrated Beatles album
More influential and ahead of its time than it's ever given credit for.

This from the text of a music appreciation class I just finished:

Virtually every aspect of Rubber Soul was to have an influence on the music and/or culture of the sixties. In both the heady ambiguity of its lyrics and the album cover's bizarrely distorted photo and graphics, it reflected the influence of drugs (first marijuana and later LSD) that would characterize the decade...in their exploration of recoding studio technology-and their conception of their new record "as an album" (rather than just a collection of potential singles)-the Beatles were in the vanguard of the transformation of rock n roll into "rock."

3. Means something to me

What's your favorite Beatles album is one that comes up a lot. The usual answers are White Album, Sgt Pepper, Revolver. I love Rubber Soul because it's the album that opened the door for all of those.

2. It's underrated compared to Sargeant Pepper, but
not the most underrated. I think the Yellow Submarine soundtrack (the British version, not the first American issue with all the instrumental padding) is more underrated. The Yellow Submarine IS the most underrated Beatles movie, though.

12. Yellow Submarine the movie was widely acclaimed when it was released
and is still considered a classic in animation film-making. Magical Mystery Tour, though, was slammed when it was first shown on TV, but acquired a cult-following in art-house movie theaters and among film students.

Actually, on a side note, all five Beatles films have proven to be very influential in some way or the other.

comparison to "Hard Day's Night."

5. Nowhere man
The Beatles - Nowhere Man

He's a real nowhere man,
Sitting in his nowhere land,
Making all his nowhere plans
For nobody.

Doesn't kave a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere man, the world is at your command.

He's as blind as he can be,
Just sees what he wants to see,
Nowhere man can you see me at all?
Doesn't kave a point of view,
Knows not where he's going to,
Isn't he a bit like you and me?
Nowhere man, don't worry,
Take your time, don't hurry,
Leave it all till somebody else
Lend you a hand.

He's a real nowhere man,
Sitting in his nowhere land,
Making all his nowhere plans
For nobody.

14. Honestly, I've never really compared the two that closely, side by side

I guess the big difference in content is that one has "Drive My Car" and the other has
"I've Just Seen a Face." I really like both songs, maybe "Drive my Car" a little more. What
do you think?

15. I like the two songs about equally
The US version seems a bit more "folk-rock" because it leads off with "I Just Seen a Face".

US version has "I've Just Seen a Face" and "It's Only Love" (both from the 'Help!' soundtrack), but doesn't have "Drive My Car", "What Goes On", "If I Needed Someone", and "Nowhere Man", like the UK version does.

20. It was more important than Sgt Peppers, IMHO
It was one of the initial salvos into psychedelia by an established mainstream act. If not for Rubber Soul, you wouldn't have The Pink Floyd (yes THE Pink Floyd, as in "Piper at the Gates of Dawn", not the bloated beast of the 70s) or even Pet Sounds, which is the greatest pop album of all time (once again, MHO).

Rubber Soul rocked. :headbang:

I like Beach Boys' Pet Sounds much better than Sgt Peppers, and I am a big Beatles fan.

22. No argument there. All of their CDs with the exception of Yellow Submarine are brilliant
But I'd say Rubber Soul is my favorite Beatles CD.

28. Yellow Submarine is a not their best, but wins for 'Hey Bulldog' and 'Only a Northern Song'
Edited on Mon May-04-09 07:48 AM by Richardo
...and possibly 'It's All Too Much'.

Those songs are brilliant.

IMO, Even a weak Beatles album is better than 95% of any other bands' efforts.

30. George Harrison was very happy recording these two albums
The recording of Sgt. Pepper was not a happy time for Harrison and Starr. Harrison thought of Rubber Soul and Revolver as sort of synonymous, kind of a double album. I tend to agree. I enjoy hearing those two albums back to back.

31. Incredible record; never thought of it as underrated though...
for me its a toss up for best, with Rubber Soul, Yesterday and Today, and Revolver...Beatles VI not far behind either. But every damn one of em is great to some extent, from the Second Album to Sgt Pepper and beyond....(IMHO anyway)
