Please tell me things get better after you turn 40.

It seems like ever since I turned 40 my life has been turning to crap.

First it was aches and pains, then it was getting tired all the time, insomnia, insecurity, then it was losing my sense of purpose, and then--worst of all--you start to lose loved ones, and your parents are getting older and getting sick, and maybe you have siblings who are getting into trouble with overspending or substance abuse, or whatever. Then you even lose people your own age, including friends, to diseases.

It seems like life becomes more about keeping your nose above the water than about actually getting ahead.

Things seem pretty bad right now, and I'm wondering if this is a common phase of life, and whether or not these clouds will eventually clear and life will seem more positive, eventually, and hopefully?

1. I turned 40 this past March.

I am fortunate. I have a more-than-fair amount of energy; above-average metabolism; overall good health (knock on wood).

Relationship-wise, I was burned badly - over and over - in my thirties. Not just romantic relationships, but with my parents and a couple of friends.

I started my 40th year in a way I never thought would happen for me. I have great love from others, and for others; I've found friends who are invaluable to me. I have two smart, healthy sons. My life - for all intents and purposes - is good. :)

Those clouds will most certainly clear for you - but sometimes you have to look for that wee bit of sun peeking through the clouds, until they go away. :hug:

2. Personally,

I've had some superb years in my 40s that I wouldn't trade for any in my 30s and 20s. I sometimes wish my head was a little more like it is now back then.

In other words, it depends how you live your years. I will give you that some of the physical shit sucks--the eyes in particular for me. And the Bush years were the pits. But some things very close to home have been incredibly good for me, vastly more satisfying than they ever were before I turned 40.

3. Things got better for me after 40, and much better still at 45 when I quit gluten

Just me, of course. Hopefully, something similar can happen for you.

6. I'm starting my 50's now...

I'd rather be in my 20's again... I was so much healthier and had more stamina...

My 40's were very rough on me.

11. I loved the 20's..hated it when I was 30 something..

I love being 41 now. Alot of people that I have known my own age have died. All those guys I hanged out with at the clubs and gay park when I was in my 20's? A lot of them have died. I used to open up the gay rag every other week and read the obits so see who died. I had several boyfriends/dating partners that have died. James,Drew,Ernesto,Ed,Ken..all gone now.

I didn't think I was going to make it to my 30's,let alone my 40's and I am very happy to be here. If i can get in another 20 years than I will declare victory over aids.

13. it took work, but I was in better physical shape in my 40's than 20's and 30's

combined.....on the other hand ,I got laid a lot less , and not by choice either...actually I take that back; it sort of was by choice; I got a lot pickier...

15. Been there

started falling asleep during the day, no joy, aches, pains, irritable...

Finally my doctor sent me in for a sleep study.

Turned out I had severe sleep apnea, which gets worse with age.

After using a CPAP machine to sleep, and later having corrective surgery for my nose, I'm back to a sunnier, well rested disposition.

Still have some aches and pains, but they don't get me down anymore.

16. I just turned 40 in February

I'm starting a new phase of my life in a big way, so I guess that changes things in my instance. In many ways I feel like a young adult going out on her own for the first time...but at the same time I'm a seasoned adult with many life experiences under her muffin top...

Bizarre, exciting and terrifying are all adjectives I feel this year.

17. My career took off in my 40s.

Got my master's degree and subsequently a better job.
