11. Correct ..........
Bob never fails, provided he's not praising Jesus - and even those albums were not that bad.

This one is great fun, isn't it?

5. Outstanding!
Great to hear that Bob is still hitting homers at his relatively advanced age.

For my evening's vinyl I'm thinking about starting with some Carla Bley (with band - I LOVE Carla's music for some reason and own lots of it though my favorites are her more intimate "partnership" albums with the peerless bassist Steve Swallow), maybe some Oscar Peterson or Sarah Vaughan and then possibly some classic r'n'r. I haven't heard my Nautilus press of The Allman Bros at Fillmore East for too long. Mayhap a bit of vintage Dylan along the lin of John Wesley Harding or Nashville Skyline. By then I will have drank enough to switch to CD's in the name of equipment safety. Jeebus, I'd love to hear that new Diana Krall on vinyl. A friend of mine just told me it is a killer disc, and he's only got the CD.

The Aesthetix IO Signature and Calypso are warming at this moment, and the Smirnoff is chilling nicely.

Audiophiles play tracks to show off their systems. Real music lovers play whole CDs and LPs cos they love the music.

6. well, i am listening to Dylan for the SECOND TIME right now
Edited on Fri May-08-09 09:48 PM by Pierre.Suave
this album is THAT GOOD!

My tubes are SINGING! Music does not get this good very often. I highly recommend buying this album, it is incredible.

Diana's new album is also very very good, I think they specifically mastered it for vinyl and tubes, because it sounds spectacular through the tubes from the vinyl!

Glad you are having a good night!

9. Thought you'd get some chucks out of that one, mon frere!
If I can find any Manley Labs "TUBES RULE" stickers, I will make sure to bring one for you when we eventually meet IRL. I do have the coffee mug and teeshirt. You can get some interesting souvenirs at CES! EveAnna is a hoot and a half. At CES her room is always stocked with good beer and she used to play Rage At The Machine at TOP volume to celebrate the end of the show.

20. Now therein lies a tale
David Manley (the founder of VTL and an EMI/Abbey Road engineer) was at some point married to the woman (name unknown) who was the mother of Luke (Luke now being married to Beatrice Lam, one of the finest listeners I know, but therein lies another story). David divorced Luke's mom and then married EveAnna (daughter of the guy who was president of Ampeg (tube) amplifiers and a Columbia graduate young enough to be David's daughter). So EveAnna, though younger than Luke, became Luke's stepmother. This went on for a few years and David established Manley Labs to build studio equipment and some hi-fi gear. After a few years David fled in alcoholic splendor to Paris, leaving Luke in charge of VTL and his ex-wife EveAnna in possession of Manley Labs.

The upshot is now that

(1) David Manley is sober and living in Paris with his French wife
(2) EveAnna is now the ruling goddess of a company that is dominant in tube studio electronics and also makes distinguished hifi gear; and
(3) Luke and his wife Beatrice Lam run VTL. Do NOT fuck with Bea. She is one of the two most astute listeners I know, the other being Warren Gehl at Audio Research. Bea has spent 25 years in front of a concert grand piano and has had SF Opera tickets for about the same period. She is good. INCREDIBLY good. She listens from the inside out; WG listens from the outside in. I would happily trade ears with either, and I am a "critic" who critiques both their efforts. Would that I had the talent of either.

Wow, that is quite a tale

But, most life is, isn't it. I am personally very grateful for Bea's ears and Lukes technical talents. I have met Luke, but not Bea, in fact Luke himself set up my amp/pre and speakers.

edit: I would also credit Luke with my choice of turntable.

12. The new Diana Krall is quite wonderful,
but I still flip whenever I listen to "The Girl In The Other Room." I don't think she'll ever do anything that great again. If she does, my head will turn to ash, I just know it.

For Dylan, why not "Blood On The Tracks"? Ever hear the bootleg of "BOTT"? It's called "The New York Sessions." It's remarkable.....................

15. Speaking of Diana Krall
When I was at the Electric Fetus earlier today buying this album, I got my name on a GIANT poster of her new album cover. I can't wait to get that thing home.

22. Four years ago,
my parents gave me the entire Dylan catalog on CD as a Christmas/birthday gift. Since then, I've only had to update it ("Modern Times," and now, "Together Through Life." :)

I have a VPI Aries 3 turntable with, at the moment, a Lyra Helikon cartridge. That plugs into my BAT VKP10 Phono amp, then to my VTL TL 7.5 series 2 Line Stage pre amp, then to my VTL S-400 Stereo Power Amp, and then finally to my Bowers and Wilkins 802Ds.

edit: Thats a whole lot of tubes...
