When I was first diagnosed with major depression, he encouraged me to buy a computer. I had of course used a computer at work, but I didn't own one.

He wanted me to use it to research depression, join some support groups, etc,

Instead, I use it to post crap on DU. I don't have the heart to tell him. :D

I've got bipolar disorder, and she tells me to get off the goddamn computer and go interact with humanity face to face. I tell her to STFU and prescribe more drugs, because dealing with people face to face just depresses the hell out of me. :)

He told me this when I was basically non-functional. I could not get out of bed, take a shower, etc. If, God Forbid, I HAD to go to the grocery store, I was so paranoid that someone I know would "see" me and know that I was "mentally ill", that I used to drive to a grocery store that was 30 miles away...ONLY when I had to because I ran out of food.

I think by the computer recommendation, he was trying to spark my interest in SOMETHING. As it happens, he got me back to near normal where I am able to socialize really well.

You may or may not be able to relate...I went through 3 very fucked up years...hospitalized twice...many med switches...many med reactions...until he finally hit on the right combo.

I don't know your situation to any real extent, but I hope you have improved also. :)

In the space of the last four years, my wife left me, I lost my home, had my 16-year diagnosis of recurrent major depression changed to bipolar disorder, went on (and off) over a dozen different meds, was hospitalized three times, didn't work for most of 2007 (and just barely kept my job), and almost poisoned myself a couple of times due to lithium toxicity (which is, oddly enough, the only bipolar drug that works for me, out of the four I've been on). The last year's been pretty good, but I'm always vigilant, almost to the point of paranoia, about my mental health.

Glad to hear things are going well for you now. And that pool analogy is spot on. I'm going to remember that one! :thumbsup:

But I tell many people that individuals who survive severe mental illness are incredibly strong. You experience this, so you know what I am saying.

This shit is not very nice, and it is very difficult to deal with. I'm proud of you for handling it.

I started to get the rash from...what is that shit...Lactimal or something? (begins with an L) and my doc took me right off it...rash started on my lip.

The depression makes insulin dependent diabetes management almost impossible...but you do the best you can.

Glad you got off that Lamictal. I was on that briefly, right before hospitalization #2. I had a quack of a shrink take me off lithium and throw Lamictal and a couple other not good drugs at me. I really wonder about some of those drugs. It seems we're little more than guinea pigs at times. I can only imagine how difficult it is to manage the diabetes at the same time. I've got pituitary and thyroid issues (mostly due to the lithium, which tends to depress thyroid functionality) and that's a pain to manage, but not nearly as trick as diabetes. I'm impressed you can stay on top of it, and it's admirable that you do as well as you do.
