Maybe we should change the definition of "promise". Like, have a 1st class promise, which would be just like an old-fashioned promise, and also have a 2nd class promise that has a negotiable, and variable, expiration date attached.

If you feel the need to play around ask for permission from the SO/spouse first or break it off with the SO/spouse and then pursue the "new person." Why be deceitful and risk a relationship nightmare for a piece of %^&?

By default it's almost always best to respect your vows.

But there are some situations and circumstances where it is best to get support and comfort elsewhere if you can get it. Marriage vows cannot and should not be absolute. Your health and well-being has to come first.
