Does anyone know if a bad power supply would still allow the LED to light up on the motherboard?

When I push in the power button on my computer, nothing happens, no fan turns on in the power supply, the computer doesn't turn on, nothing, the computer is dead silent....

Then after opening up the case, I noticed the (green) LED is lit up on the motherboard.

But again, nothing turns on when I push in the computers power button.... Is it conceivable that the power supply can still be bad even though the light (LED) is lit on the motherboard obviously receiving power?

1. Yes. The power supply provides several positive and negative voltages.

The 12 volt can go out but the 3.5 volt may still function. The fan not turning on is a good indicator that the power supply is the problem rather than the motherboard. The fan runs on 12 volts and so do the hard drives. That transformer might just be hosed.

I'm leaning the same way, towards the power supply needing replacing...Which is a lot less of a pain, time & cost than replacing the MB....
