Who would you induct into the Rock and Roll HOF?
Edited on Sat May-09-09 11:22 PM by OmahaBlueDog
We've all (I trust) seen Midnight Amadillo's "Most Overrated Band Thread" (MA seems to lean toward "The Who")

First, I'm not posting a poll (odd of me, I know)

Second, here is the alphabetical list of R&RHOF Inductees:
http://www.rockhall.com/inductees/alphabetical-list/

Third, this RIAA all time sales list might be a useful reference:
http://www.riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?resultpage=1&table=tblTopArt&action=

Off the top of my head, I can think of three inductees I'd look for"

Andre Romelle Young a.k.a Dr Dre.: Yes, he's been sued by a "who's who" of hollywood, and yes, he's associated with some of the most controversial aspects of Gangsta Rap as a member of NWA, but Dre has produced the biggest hits for Eminem and 50Cent. At the end of the day, Rock N Roll has always been about pushing the envelope and pissing off parents. He has continued this grand tradition.

Steve Winwood has appeared in the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and Blind Faith in addition to a solo career that produced such hits as "Back in the High Life". "Valerie", "When You See a Chance" and "Arc of a Diver".

Peter Gabriel has had an amazing career, both as a solo artist, and as a member of Genesis. "In Your Eyes", "Shock the Monkey", and "Sledgehammer" are a few of the many incredible songs he's done.

Have at it, and when you flame (especially if you have been drinking), flame responsibly.

edited for an idiotic mistake

Two more that deserve to be inducted IMO: Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Metal is under-represented IMO.

14. There is a big debate over what is Rock
What you bring up is an argument as old as rock music. The mods vs. the rockers; Buddy Holly vs. Elvis; the Beatles or the Stones; Prog rock? Punk? Glam Rock? Art Rock? NY vs. LA; Britain vs. America. A lot of people don't like Rap being included, but I'd assert that Rock has it's roots in Black music, and that it's still a part of the equation.

16. NWA is more rock-n-roll to me than Peter Gabriel.
Rock-n-roll has that 'I know it when I hear it' quality for me. If you have a band of leather jacketed thugs playing an Eddie Cochran tune hard/loud/fast then you have rock-n-roll and it get's more diluted from there. I like the theoretical 100% pure stuff the best.

19. I keep reminding myself it's a tourist attraction. Some non rock acts make sense as inductees
Ahmet and Neshui Ertegun, for example. The Erteguns recorded Led Zeppelin, Ray Charles, Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, and many others. They are not performers, but they are a huge part of Rock music. Bill Graham, Herb Alpert, and Jerry Moss would also fall into this group.

I think the R& RHOF has chosen to take the broadest possible perspective on what is rock music versus what should be excluded. Thus, Motown, Rap, Beach Music, and certain country and jazz artists have wound up included.

24. Tina is actually in, but she's paired with Ike, which is just wrong
If you go to the "Most Overrated Band" thread, several of us engage in a Kiss-or-Heart to the HOF debate. The sales numbers and numbers of hits clearly support Heart.

My advice to Ringo is knock out a wildly popular late-in-career CD, like it appears Dylan has just done. That would solidify his legend status as a solo artist.

She's arguably the Queen of rock n roll. Heart rocked it, Ann Wilson has one of the greatest rock voices ever. Kiss should get in too, I'm surprised they're not already. Another female artist I forgot to mention was Donna Summer, I know disco is a much maligned music genre but it certainly gave us some memorable tunes (both good and bad).

All the big hits were in the Phil Collins era.

That said, Genesis deserves to be in; so does Phil Collins solo; So does Peter Gabriel solo

50. According to James Hetfield of Metallica...
Edited on Sun May-10-09 12:35 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
...who was asked "What are you going to do with Dave Mustaine," his reply was that induction is based on the recording members of the band, and since Mustaine never recorded with Metallica, he wasn't eligible.

So it all depends on how well the band is getting along. My understanding regarding the fact that the last reunion didn't include Gabriel or Hackett was that their schedules had more to do with it than their desire to participate.

That means all of the band members below are eligible for induction:

From Genesis to Revelation (March 1969): Peter Gabriel (vocals), Anthony Phillips (guitar), Tony Banks (keyboards), Mike Rutherford (bass & guitar) and John Silver (drums).

Trespass: John Mayhew replaces John Silver (drums).

Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Genesis Live, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway: Phil Collins replaces Mayhew, Steve Hackett replaces Phillips

Post-Hackett & Gabriel: Daryl Stuermer (who replaced Hackett onstage, but not on the studio albums, which were played by Rutherford) is eligible because he's appeared on live albums. The same for Chester Thompson (drums).

:toast:

ON EDIT:

Forgot Ray Major, from the regrettable "Calling All Stations"...

...also on that album, the drum chair was filled by Nir Zidkyahu and Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard).

48. I guess I favor the more inclusive outlook
Why are pop acts any more or less deserving than punk, progressive, glam rock, metal, grunge, rap, or beach/drag racing acts? We all have a lot of fun saying, "because my music is great and your/their music sucks"; I view the genre like a tree -- a lot of different roots and a lot of different branches.

54. I think a line needs to be drawn somewhere so that people
like Madonna don't get in. Now the Beach Boys and Beatles did a lot of pop music too, but 'I Get Around' and many others are indeed rnr songs. Beatles started out wearing leather jax and doing Gene Vincent songs and wandered back into rnr many times throughout their career. But I don't recall a single Madonna song that could reasonably be called rock-n-roll music.

58. Critics make the same complaints about Rap and Motown
Is "Today's Country" country or pop?

If Lynyrd Skynyrd or the Marshall Tucker Band appeared on the scene in 2009, would they be considered a rock act or a country act?

Eminem claims he's basically doing Elvis' act <<Though I'm not the first king of controversy, I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley, To do Black Music so selfishly,And use it to get myself wealthy, Hey! there's a concept that works,20 million other white rappers emerge, But no matter how many fish in the sea, It will be so empty without me..>>. Problem: his music sounds nothing like what most of us think of as R & R.

Jazz has wrestled with this for years: what does Kenny G have to do with Jellyroll Morton or Duke Ellington?

As I said upthread, I tend to err in favor of inclusion

61. A line has to be drawn somewhere or it should just be the
music hall of fame, complete with Beethoven next to the Chuck Berry exhibit. Since a line must be drawn, I say Madonna is on the other side of that line or we will indeed see Britney and the American Idols one day.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is very close to pure rock-n-roll IMO. They take all of the good stuff from the dawn of the genre except for Doo-wop. You can hear Chuck Berry riffs and rockabilly and girl-group harmonies and the blues etc. There should be no question that LS is rock-n-roll.

62. I think that if popularity is the main criteria, then Little Richard
would be looking in and Pat Boone looking out. I don't get how they make such a good call like PB out and LR in, and then turn around and (apparently) say Rod Stewart's solo adventures in disco are HOF worthy but his actual rock-n-roll band, the Faces, aren't.

I really think that they take a room full of monkeys and throw darts to decide who gets in. There is no uniform criteria.

63. The Runaways, and Joan Jett. Every time i see a list of who is in
I am amazed they aren't on it, maybe they didn't sell well, but the influence can't be measured.
