8. Sadly, yes
The Old Dirty Hippies are too old to know about them.

The kiddies were born fifteen years after Ian died.

A lot of the 1970s crowd were listening to Kiss, Abba, and Steve Miller, whether they admit it or not.

It's mostly a small group of snot-nosed early Xers and tail-end Boomers who know about Joy Division. Their influence can be heard in virtually every first-wave post punk band (U2, Echo, REM) and in the sound of Interpol, etc.

9. It's amazing to think how obscure they are, isn't it?
To people in my circle in 1980 or thereabouts, they were like gods.

11. You're a couple of years older than me, I think
I came of age musically c. 1983 or so; lots of U2, Pretenders, Pogues, Alarm, Echo, etc. Bono has said many times how big an influence Ian Curtis was on U2, and you can hear the influence of Joy Division (and the Velvet Underground) in Echo & the Bunnymen's work.

Funny how bands we college radio types assume are huge are still basically unknown to most people. The average Joe has no idea who Joy Division, Husker Du, Jason & the Scorchers, or Let's Active were!

3. otherwise known as "The Band That Got Me Through College"
in the late 80s. Great band, great sound, great look. And hugely influential on the modern music, too. No JD, no Interpol.

4. Haha, good call on the Joy Division influence on interpol.
It's even more pronounced on Editors, I think.

6. Oh yeah, definitely
The first time I heard the Editors I thought it was some previously unknown track from JD!
