Tony Romo fails to qualify for the U.S. Open
Pure comedy gold, folks...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Tony-Romo-fails-to-qualify-for-the-U-S-Open?urn=nfl,162916

Tony Romo(notes) played in a local U.S. Open qualifier Monday in hopes of earning a berth in next month's major championship. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback came up short though, shooting an 80 at Dallas National Golf Club and failing to advance. Proving that his golf career mirrors his football career, Romo fell apart late, triple-bogeying the 16th hole while carding a 44 on the back nine. (I kid, I kid. I'd kill to shoot an 80 on a U.S. Open qualifying course.)...

Of all the years to not qualify though, this was probably a good one. The Open will be played at Bethpage Black on Long Island this year in front of a crowd that would likely be hostile to the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. More importantly, the first day of the Open (June 18) is the last day of the Cowboys' veteran minicamp. (It would have been interesting to see whether Wade Phillips would have even noticed Romo's absence.) But if Romo does end up making it to the Open one day, I shudder to think of how fawning ESPN's weekday coverage would be. It might make Brett Favre(notes) blush.

1. Umm
He does remember that he's a pro football player right? No wonder he never wins the big one .. Between Jessica Simpson and now this...he really seems to enjoy the celebrity part of celebrity QB. Let's see what The Wanker thinks of this..

2. I'm not the world's biggest Romo fan, but just getting to the final round...
...of qualifying for the US Open is a pretty major deal (if you're not a professional golfer).

12. GOPiE, the Local Qualifier is the first/opening round for U.S. Open qualifying.
You just have to have a maximum handicap index of 1.4; i.e., he has a tight enough relationship with a club pro willing to attest to that handicap. The top scores from local qualifying go on to sectional qualifying, where they're often in a field that includes actual PGA Tour pros. In other words, you have to really golf your ball to have a shot at actually getting into the tournament field!

6. 80 is pretty awesome. He should quit football.
Besides, it's not like he pays much attention to that anyways. :P

13. We haven't gone back yet.
Most likely we'll go back this Saturday. We're trying to find a DVD for him from an old Boston thrash band Wargasm, one of our all time favorites. Last September they played a 20th anniversary show and I went, and not even thinking I wore the Wargasm shirt I bought when I visited my friend. One of the first things he said was, "Don't even tell me you saw them." :)
